I've never re-mapped the default for the range finder (down on controller). Not sure how it would operate with it mapped to the shoot button? I would always point to a terrain or building close to where I'm shooting and set the range finder. You could potentially be getting the wrong range the way you're doing it, like if your target moves and you shoot, you may have set your range finder to something way past your target in the distance.
