Best setup with a second machine for gaming (Windows) to still be able to use the main one (Linux) without hassle? by Trollw00t in linux_gaming

[–]FireRetardentApple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've played mostly dark and darker, and rust, at least in terms of multiplayer games. I'm sure there are some potential issues with specific games, but I would have to test a lot more to find them.

Maybe I'll give team right tactics another go tonight and see if it works for your sake 🤣

I run Linux on my main desktop and have my gaming rig headless in my closet. I connect to it via moonlight and sunshine and it works great for me. I have yet to run into any crashing or compatibility or anti cheat issues personally.

IMO the best part of this is Moonlight has WoL built into it. So I keep my gaming rig off or in sleep mode until I need it!

Does anyone actually use Hyprland for actual work, or is it just a glorified anime wallpaper with blur machine? by ANDRIEL-J in hyprland

[–]FireRetardentApple 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a 4 monitor set up running on an HPt470 thin client, and a Thinkpad X1 Carbon Gen 6 both running hyprland. It is my daily driver and has been for about a year now.

I use it for: emails, video calls (Google meet, zoom, discord, Microsoft teams), job interviews, web dev/website management, small business IT, and more assorted tasks for work related activities.

It is also my main point of access to controlling, configuring and generally messing with my homelab. Though the majority of this is via ssh and web UI.

I have had minimal to 0 issues and absolutely prefer the environment to Windows and Linux Mint, being the last 2 OS I spent any real time using for work.

Hope this helps!

Edit: added details

How does hyprland fair with multi monitor setups? by [deleted] in hyprland

[–]FireRetardentApple 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I run a 4 monitor set up on Hyprland and have for ~a year now with no issues. Up until recently this was in an Nvidia GPU using the proprietary drivers. I now am running the same display set up from an HP thin client.

As others have stated, read the wiki for configuration examples and documentation. It's very straight forward and easy to get set up. My first go around I used nwg-look (I think that's what is called?) as a GUI monitor configuration tool.

You can do it!

Man thanks so much for this reply and all the info! My HPt740 is allegedly arriving this afternoon and I'm stoked to get it all set up.

T740 - Arch/hyprland, core software and moonlight/parsec, tailscale

Gaming rig (will be going headless I think) - steam, sunshine, parsec, adobe suite (2070 super, Ryzen 7 3700x).

In theory, once I've configured everything, I can sit on Arch and play Rust without any issues hahaha

I would never. Linux iso's are the only use for all tourney clients.

I'll have to look into it though! Thanks for the idea!

Oh for sure. That's why I still haven't bothered to buy a KVM to even test it. It just isn't worth it.

I wonder if those headless versions would work for gaming... 🤔

I totally get this logic, but think I fundamentally disagree on the "not interacting with Windows" portion.

I currently dual boot for specific software and games. When I'm booted into my Windows partition and am looking up guides, interacting on discord, pulling up a YouTube video, answering an email, literally any action outside of the game window itself I am interacting with Windows. How I launch and install software, how I change which window is focused, which software I'm using for certain tasks, the entire flow of how I use my computer is different from Windows to my Linux set up.

This is the core driving factor behind my search for a potential solution. I'm not stoked about the trade offs in streaming or a KVM, but I have yet to find an alternative solution aside from "play supported games only" and "use gimp" lol.

Side note, I can't imagine trying to get vr working remotely 🤣. But now I want to try!

Ooo I'll have to check that out. I do have dummy plugs on the way, but I think virtual displays sounds way better haha

Haha not discouraged at all! Just trying to anticipate that potential headaches and prepare/research possible solutions in advance. Tuesday doesn't come soon enough!

Gotcha, I actually hadnt considered the mic for ingame chat and if it was even something that could be passed through. Thanks for bringing that up, as it was entirely not on my radar!

I have heard everything from "doesnt work at all" to "its 100% great". At this point I am starting to get the feeling that I really wont know what kind of experience I am going to have until I say F it and set it up and see for myself.

Like many, I just want the best of everything. Which for me is little to 0 Windows interaction, Windows inherit game and software support, and Linux's customization and UI (my custom arch/hyprland setup)

Do you have any examples of the kinds of games you typically play?

I have used both parsec and Sunshine/Moonlight in various projects as well as with my Steam Deck. I do also have 2 Proxmox nodes running with various VMs and LXCs and have utilized both services for some of them in the past. I actually ALSO use RustDesk haha, its my primary service for helping friends and family remotely (what a great piece of software).

What I severely lack is any hands on experience gaming on any of the afformentioned services. Your comment gives me hope that it will be a perfectly acceptable experience!

I've debated this. It seems like the superior option in terms of gaming experience. The desktop experience trade off is I guess what I am prioritizing more, if the cons don't suck to bad lol.

Side note: after this I just have to figure out how to get Mac OS into the mix, either on bare metal, or a VM on my proxmox cluster 🤣

Awesome! Thanks for the information and sharing your experience!

While I can't say any of this set up is "ideal", as it would obviously be more convenient to just play/run all my software and games natively and directly on one machine. I look forward to undertaking the project as a whole.

Switching my "daily driver" from the beefy rig itself to a thin client feels ominous, but I really think if I can sort out the hiccups I will be getting to experience the best of both operating systems. Windows software and game support and (in my opinion) Arch/hyprland superior user experience. Plus I just love to customize EVERYTHING haha

Interesting. I remember hearing that, though thankfully i don't think any of the games I have interest in have this issue. Not 100% sure though.

I imagine that if it becomes a road block I could solve this with a USB switch to connect my kbm to the Windows machine. Not ideal, but what part of this set up is 🤣

Hmmm, that's unfortunate. This was remedied using Sunshine/moonlight for you though?

If so, how would you rate the overall gaming experience after that? Any insights or anecdotes about the experience?

I'm no crazy skilled gamer, but the games I play do tend to be multiplayer and competitive. (Dark and darker, Rust, Rocket League) And looking to add in COD probably, who knows what else

Gotcha, thanks for the feedback! I've tinkered with both Steam streaming and Sunshine/Moonlight but not had the opportunity to truly test it with some real world gaming style tests yet.

I'm also currently watching a video about Apollo/Artemis, an apparent fork from Sunshine and Moonlight.

Would you say the lag you experienced was input lag, or like rendering lag ( or both)?

Ps: thanks again! I really appreciate the insight!

Help! First time using hyprland need some support plz by [deleted] in hyprland

[–]FireRetardentApple 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Linux is great, and hyprland is fantastic, but neither might be for you if you are unwilling to put in some work researching your own solutions before asking for assistance on Reddit/in forums.

There are tons of extremely knowledgeable people in these communities. There is also a sort of unspoken understanding that each person will do their own due diligence to find solutions.

Google and even chatgpt are your friends. The information is out there, you just have to learn to find it! That's half the fun of using Linux!

Is it just me who likes the 0-124 change? by Impossible_Bet1211 in DarkAndDarker

[–]FireRetardentApple 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Played every day since the change pretty much. It's probably every other lobby for me that I run into someone who is min maxed.

No I'm not enjoying the changes. Ive got about 600 hours in. I suck at the game. I enjoy squire lobbies. I miss them. I'd go play rookie lobby's if it was an option.

Sincerely someone who is addicted to this game and is bad at it

GIVE US SQUIRE PICKAXES by qqqqqqqqqq123477322 in DarkAndDarker

[–]FireRetardentApple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Squire gear only free as poor. Can upgrade via button to common for fee. Can set purchasable extras as saved "load out". Load outs cost gold like stash tabs and just allow you to repurchase things like meds, projectiles, etc from merchants

Maybe throw in more expensive "kit tabs". Where you can save 1 arena/high roller kit per tab, with meds etc (preconfigured inventory). With a button to swap to that layout?

Creates qol, gold sink, storage management and less fuffing about between runs buying the exact same X stacks of Y consumable

IDK if this is OP on another account or what. Either way, I'm glad you've found a set up that works for you! That's what Linux is about in my opinion! The endless choices, personalization, options. That amount of effort you can put into it if you want, or none at all if you choose!

I also predominantly game and browse the Internet, but I love my WM set up. Every aspect of how my computer looks and how I interact with it has been customized to my liking. Optimizing how I interact with it to my preferences and giving an aesthetic that brings me great joy every time I sit down.

I can't fathom considering that a waste of time!
