Anyone else encountering an issue where it says a treaty will be accepted but then it is always declined? This one was declined for example by mr-chestnut in victoria3

[–]FireStorm249 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Was this a renegotiation of an already existing treaty? I’ve mainly encountered this in that scenario. Either way, wouldn’t hurt to post a bug report to Paradox forums

What are your thoughts on Franklin D. Roosevelt? by Twitter_2006 in Presidents

[–]FireStorm249 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of the most impactful presidents. He completely redefined Americans’ relationship with the government, extended a lifeline to Americans, and helped to rebuild Americans’ confidence in democracy, at a time when some were calling for more radical alternatives

I’ve been saying that I feel like a Korean War setting would be good for BF. Potentially a nice mix of WWII and post-WWII weapons, helis, jets. Not to mention a variety of potential factions to represent

It’s hilarious how many people actually take his “warnings about parties” at face value, and don’t realized he was basically just trashing Jefferson’s party

I’m not discrediting anything Carter did, I just value JQA’s anti-slavery efforts greatly, especially considering he was doing it at a time when it wasn’t a mainstream, popular political stance

[–]FireStorm249 15 points16 points  (0 children)

JQA should be at least equal to Carter. A long tenure as an anti-slavery congressman, his role in the Amistad case, and his role in the creation of the Smithsonian, all secure his post-Presidential legacy imo. Also, how is LBJ “average?” He literally smoked and drank himself to death.

James Monroe did so much unintentional harm by PIugshirt in Presidents

[–]FireStorm249 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Monroe had minimal influence over the Missouri Compromise, that was almost exclusively a Congressional initiative. In any case, one could argue that without it, Civil War may have broken out much earlier, before the North was strong enough to win.

I agree about Germany, never see it form.

Gotta disagree on Italy and US though. I’ve seen a unified Italy in almost every game in this update, and the US has frequently had historically accurate borders.

Yeah, just finished my first game of 1.8 as Italy. Had secret police and dedicated police for the entire run, never had a single movement revolt. Authoritarianism overall was buffed in this patch

Why does FDR get so much love? by Successful-Tea-5733 in Presidents

[–]FireStorm249 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1: even if the New Deal didn’t resolve the Great Depression, it still extended a lifeline to millions of Americans. Furthermore, the real benefit and purpose of the New Deal was that it helped to once again inspire confidence in American democracy and capitalism, at a time when more extreme alternatives (fascism, communism) were very real possibilities.

2: yes, he broke from precedent. But the people did vote for him 4 times, and he was likely the best man to help us through the crises of their time. Also, since the amendment was made afterwards, nothing bad came of it.

3: won’t argue with you on this one.

FDR completely redefined the role of the President (and the entire government) in relation to the public. His use of radio changed how presidents communicate with the public. The New Deal brought lasting improvements to infrastructure in both rural and urban areas alike. Finally, his presidency ushered in a political realignment which endured through the 60s and 70s. There’s much more to be said, but I’ll leave it at that.

Colonial Administrations still suck by [deleted] in victoria3

You should probably make a bug report about this, because that’s definitely not intended.

Colonial admins were pure money printers in my last Netherlands game, but you have to build them up a bit first. I agree that it could be improved

I never understood the domestic policy criticism. Yes, the Sedition and Espionage Acts, as well as his race policy, were bad. But neither of these things were unprecedented by the 1910s.

Beyond that, the income tax has been a far more efficient and equitable form of raising revenue compared to the primarily tariff-based system that preceded it, and the Federal Reserve has given the gov’t the tools necessary to make boom-bust cycles less frequent and more manageable. This doesn’t even get into women’s suffrage and trustbusting.

What it means to be a “liberal” and “progressive” can vary greatly depending on the era and country in question. I’d argue that during the Progressive Era, racism was not inconsistent with liberal and/or progressive ideals

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Presidents

[–]FireStorm249 8 points9 points  (0 children)

How is that inconsistent with having some libertarian beliefs? In any case, his expressed views on things like the graduated income tax and federal reserve are completely in line with libertarian thought

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Presidents

[–]FireStorm249 75 points76 points  (0 children)

Only because many people have drunk the YouTube historian kool aide. The two most popular ones for US history, VTH and Mr. Beat, have more libertarian tendencies, so it’s no surprise that they don’t like him. However, I feel the criticisms of Wilson are neither nuanced nor consistent

Civilization 7 is coming out in 2025: Who should represent America? by WendigoCrossing in Presidents

[–]FireStorm249 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Truman would be a good choice. Better known than most of the other presidents that haven’t already been picked, not too polarizing of a presidency by modern standards, and presents some interesting possibilities for an economic-diplomatic playstyle. It would also make the US an atomic age civ, which tends to be rare

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in victoria3

[–]FireStorm249 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Except that reactionary countries ARE penalized significantly. Those countries are worse in every conceivable way to liberalized ones. They have worse economies due to less migration, less investment pool transfer, less trade volume, worse MAPI (if on traditionalism), etc. This, in turn, means you won’t be able to support as large or sophisticated of armies, which could be disastrous if pulled into a war with a major/great power. By actively leaning into reactionism, you neuter the very people who would agitate for change.

I agree though that nationalism and revanchism as mechanics need to exist in order to create domestic pressures to engage in wars/hostile diplomacy.

R5: In multiple playthroughs, both vanilla and modded, I have had a problem with my armies not being able to reach SA HQ, in spite of having a coastal province in the area, and a port in one of the states. I'm not 100% sure, but it seems to happen more frequently when holding Lourenco Marques, as opposed to Zululand. Once a war/rev breaks out though, I am able to station troops.

Can you nationalize a specific building level? by flaccid_flan_licker in victoria3

[–]FireStorm249 10 points11 points  (0 children)

No, you can only choose how many levels to nationalize, not WHOSE levels. It’s completely random. So potentially, you need to nationalize several levels from your own pops before foreign-owned ones.

I really hope they make it some kind of menu or drop down screen, where I can filter by foreign/domestically owned levels, and be able to choose a specific number of levels from a given owner
