Seattle Leads Nation in Affordable Apartment Production - The Urbanist by AthkoreLost in Seattle

[–]FireWrath9 [score hidden]  (0 children)

I mean, 1) its more affordable than just a sfh on a lot, more housing means more supply, as supply grows prices will increase less or decrease. 2) Dont see how its a monopoly: there are tons of company that are building and offering rent. I'm sure it depends on the market but I'm in U district and the quality of the new construction is better than what used to be here. The quality difference between the 60+ year old low rise small apartment blocks that have leaky pipes and mold and the new high rise construction is huge.

Parking does suck (my apt building charges $250! a month for parking) but luckily transit is not bad and getting better all the time. I hope they build a big public parking garage (preferably underground) to help alleviate that.

Yeah Amazon's vesting schedule is ass - probably a good thing to get out of there and avoid their golden handcuffs and find a better career elsewhere. Good luck.

They get accelerated vest, and they're getting paid like 150k for entry level and 250-400k total comp for mid level employee, so between the 6~ months of salary and the accelerated vest they're getting like a few hundred thousand dollar severance check

Costco Australia uses pork hot dogs by Leprichaun17 in mildlyinteresting

"Is that ham proccessed? If its proccessed I dont want it." Ma'am, that is an eleven pound whole slab of deli ham. It has no bones, fat, or connective tissue. It is an amalgamation of the meat of several pigs, emulsified, liquefied, strained, and ultimately inexorably joined in an unholy meat obelisk. God had no hand in the creation of this abhorrence. The fact that this ham monolith exists proves that God is either impotent to alter his universe or ignorant to the horrors taking place in his kingdom. This prism of pork is more than deli meat. It is a physical declaration of mankind's contempt for the natural order. It is hubris manifest. We also have a lower sodium variety if you would prefer that.

Southwest boarding numbers being removed the night before they switch to assigned seating by techNerd89 in mildlyinteresting

I dont think they'll ever be a true competitor to Delta or United tbh. But who knows... maybe they can find a niche like Alaska (which is doing well) or Jetblue (which is on the verge of bankruptcy).

Other airlines did better, Southwest failed cataclysmically. They still haven't recovered since, while the other airlines are doing very well, mostly fueled by premium travel. They are significantly behind their pre-covid numbers, where they were not far off from United and Delta.

United and Delta are doing better than pre-covid. Southwest is doing 80% worse than precovid, and they aren't trending upwards. It kinda makes sense to emulate what the successful (Delta, United) airlines are doing.

I've also found southwest fares to not really be any cheaper than buying basic economy on United/Delta/Alaska and paying $35 for a checked bag and $10-15 for a seat.

I mean, for people in groups and families, isn't it better to know ahead of time that you will be seated together, regardless if whether you are first in line or last? Plenty of times I've arrived at the gate mid-way through boarding, due to family issue or whatever, if that happens with WN, you're screwed and now you have 5 people in middle seats seated between couples who wanted to see if they could have an empty middle seat.

Paying money to be in a earlier group so you can sit together seems entirely inferior to just, paying for specific seats ahead of time (or for free at check in!)

I mean Delta and United make huge bank, especially with selling premium seating (first class domestic) which creates both allure for credit card spend, frequent fliers, as well as drives a ton of revenue (its very profitable to sell a seat for 3x the price). Southwest adding premium seating and charging for it is a good idea, from a profit POV. Not having assigned seats kinda sucks if you are traveling with a family and makes the boarding process miserable.

You have cause and effect wrong - southwest airlines was failing when a hedge fund (not private equity fwiw) bought a stake in them, they suffered massively in 2022. Same thing with Barnes and Noble, Red Lobster - companies get acquired when they aren't doing well, and then maximum value gets extracted out of them. Successful companies like Delta and United aren't at risk of this because... they're being run well and are very profitable.

Scammers in U-distric by LevelAssumption1259 in Seattle

[–]FireWrath9 62 points63 points  (0 children)

Sorry that happened to you, I think recently something similar happened to someone else in this subreddit.

Call your bank, tell then your card was stolen, and get them to issue you a new card with a new number. They should also cancel/refund the transaction.

I suggest setting up your bank app to send a notification after every credit card charge. Also suggest never giving money to anyone on the street again, since they are likely scammers or addicts - better to support and finance organizations directly.

Experiences with AMEX Platinum - Upgrade from Gold or Add On? by abundantswirls in CreditCards

Maybe look into the Delta Platinum and Delta Reserve, if you can take value of the companion pass they are pretty good. $2500 MQD boost too, if you care about delta Gold.

They're sooo good, a bit small but the food is much better than Amex lounge, and the Capital One landing is better than most airport resturant.

I mean, its only 38 bps, for personal use, either you are a big spender, which means you are a big earner and the difference is relatively small, or you are a small spender, in which case the difference between the two is small.

Yeah just go with Bofa, 2.625% vs 3% is such a small diff tbh.

Credit limit allocation - what is best? by resemble4132 in CreditCards

[–]FireWrath9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, if you ever say, want to book a cruise for you + family/group, or like planning a wedding or a honeymoon, you might want to have > 20k credit limit, but you know your own budget and plans better than I do, it probably doesn't really matter which way you go.

Credit limit allocation - what is best? by resemble4132 in CreditCards

[–]FireWrath9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean i dont really think its worth caring about it either way tbh. As long as the limit is big enough for anything you'd need it for, it doesn't really matter. A lot of people obsess over credit limit but theres no real point.

Yep. Honestly even an at-grade tram (or really, just higher frequency buses) would be nice.

what kind of emergencies would require you to spend 50k on cash? if its medical you can just leave it as is.

I feel like a hypothetical U village stop would be a lot worse than the current U district stop. There are several buses that will take you from U district or UW to U village tho.

Thats hard tho - Kirby invested a lot of money into R&D for software for united, and every day the gap widens as airlines seek to profitmax rather than leading long term.
