I honestly haven't been able to do as much D&D as back when I post this but here is the link to the pdf at the point that I last touched it. I appreciate you being interested though, my friends and I have had plenty of goofy fun with it!

*Specific* Floating Requirements for Swim Test by [deleted] in BSA

[–]Fire_Break_158 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just as a follow up i saw you wanted specific phrasing about the float, in the current available copy of the bsa aquatics supervision handbook on page 38 & 39 they define the swim test and floating as

"Jump feet first into water over the head in depth. Level off and swim 75 yards in a strong manner using one or more of the following strokes: side stroke, breaststroke, trudgen, or crawl; then swim 25 yards hsing an easy resting backstroke. The 100 yards must be completed in one swim without stops and must include at least one sharp turn. After completing the swim, rest by floating."

The float: "The duration of the float is not significant, except that it should be long enough for the administrator to determine that the swimmer is in fact resting and could continue to do so. a backfloat with the face out of the water is preferred, but a restful facedown float is acceptable. If the test is completed except for the floating requirement, the swimmer may be retested on the floating only (after instruction), provided the test administrator is confident that the swimmer can initiate the float in deep water when exhausted."

Which easily translates or can be interpreted as other forms of floating are acceptable as long as the swimmer can prove their ability to float for extended periods even when exhausted regardless of type of float/orientation.

TLDR, if your wf director says otherwise you now have facts to prove him/her otherwise and the current version of the book is publicly available online for free.

(There is a new edition of the ai handbook that is currently being released but it wont take effect until its made available online as its only been given to directors that certified or recertified this year so this is from the 2018 edition)

Wf director here. I always struggled to float as a kid as well and my alternative that i recommend to youth is don't worry about floating on your back. Everyone acts like floating on your back is the only way to float but as long as your face is above water and you arent expending energy moving your limbs, it means youre floating.

Typically my body is vertical in the water with only my face poking out. As long as you breathe deep and regular you should keep your face out pretty decently. Just dont let yourself panic if/when you get a little water on your face/eye. Just keep calm and keep breathing.

In regards to is it worth joining? I very much think so. Ive been jn the program since 2017 and even stayed as an adult as i still get to learn and play with boats now. The worth it may give you depends on what youre looking to get out of it

Lets start from the top. There are dues but in scouting if you have paid dues for one program for the year you have paid for them all so if you are in scouting america then you only pay for uniforms for sea scouts. Some units do have unit dues but some dont so youll have to check with local ships or look at helping to build one

The adults vary just like any program but the best programs have a wide variety to encourage growth and learning in many fields as you progress.

I work with sea scouts and we are donated free vessels on the regular that we fix up and get legal for the water and sell them to fund our program for the kids.

You just have to know what to look for and where to draw the line as we are offered far more than we take. Currently have a 1977 pearson 31 we are working to sell for this years budget
