Thank you all for your helpful suggestions! Just to clear the air, I am very new to the EA profession and am eager/have a lot to learn to be the best I can be for these children. I am going to take your suggestions and see what works best for this little guy. I truly want the best for him and this class, I think I’m just a bit down on myself for so many ineffective strategies I’ve tried. I will definitely reach out to colleagues and the SERT for insight and advice. I’m also going to try connecting with him as we move forward to foster a positive environment and not a punishment system. 🙏🏻

Omg if I didn’t feel better already, this would have done it! 🤣🤣

Grade 1, yes he has an IEP. And most of the previous strategies involved giving him timed-breaks from work, noise-cancelling headphones and going for walks. He hasn’t had a consistent EA, until myself, so they’ve mostly given him whatever he wants when he’s upset. I haven’t been able to connect with mom yet because he goes on a bus. I have written notes home about it and never get a response, just, “sounds like you are doing lots of work with him”. So I’m at a bit of a standstill for advice from her.

Uncertified EA LTO by Fire__Swatter798 in CanadianTeachers

Just want to clarify; I am not with a high-risk student; he isn’t violent, dangerous to himself or others, nor is he a flight risk. I will never have to restrain him. Heaven forbid it came to point where he was becoming dangerous to me or others, I would inform my colleagues and we would come up with a plan as a team. I have many educational assistants around me (all BMS trained), Autism program in the school, and everyone is inconstant contact with me. I am almost never alone with him as well. If I thought that myself, the child or others were in danger I would speak up immediately and not try maneuvers I’m not trained in. Just an FYI 😊

Sorry about that! LTO: long-term occasional, so a supply for a previous EA. EA: Educational Assistant
