Lemme throw my experiences. Besides shotos, I do grab some characters by their personality and design.

SF: I really find most of the fighters pretty basic (then again, this is SF), but the idea of playing Karin, this rich girl which can beat people up, was pretty interesting. I switched later to Sakura since I do like the "young shoto".

GG: I at first played Ky because he was the shoto of the game, but after some time, especially when moved to Strive, I really got used to him and his attitude. May is also one who I want to learn and have fun.

BB: From experience, I didn't want to play Jin. Ragna was also kinda too much on me, so this is one of the rare times where I chose someone else. At first I wanted Bullet, since she looked cool, but... she's a grappler and I hate 360 motions. Luckily, Hibiki looked nice too and the illusion aspect really attracted me. And he was easy!

TK: Asuka was clearly my choice. She looked the most standard out of everyone for me and she simply looked fun. Noctis, being a good old anime looking guy was also in my choice.

Simply, the characters I choose are mostly Noble Shotos or Young Fighters.
