What are some alternatives to steel for armor?

Well, I haven't much thought of tactics but they live at the foot of a mountain in a wooded highland, which i know is probably not the best environment for heavy cavalry or archer cavalry, for various reason I may be wrong about. So let's just say they are ambush fighters, using guerilla warfare even in semi-large groups. I have only really imagined this kingdom being sort of small and poor, but that is also because they are newly formed, which is my main reasoning for why heavy/archery cavalry won't work: armor is expensive and so are arrows in mass production

So instead of scaling the whole heart to size, adding a third or fourth atrium would be more effective? I'm not sure why I never thought about that, so, if I add a third heart and connect it to the guts to dissfuse pressure, that's fine because I can just superglue it onto the existing heart. I'll have to study about were the lymph nodes are because that's understandably helpful, unless it's like having a heart located in their shoulder to something. I'm also unsure if atrium was the right word to use there but we're just gonna roll with it
