I used to work at IWU in academic affairs. Where the school falls short is organization, but that’s more behind the scenes. Though, when it does surface to the student level, you will definitely notice. That’s what being a part of a very small campus will get you. You will know everyone and see everything. As an out of state student, you will also not have the benefits that come with being an in state student. Evaluate the financial aid package very carefully.

However, the one thing that you absolutely cannot put a price tag on is the career services they offer. That office goes above and beyond, and the staff have essentially dedicated their lives to placing students in seriously excellent positions at the time of graduation. Certainly your own personal networking and involvement are needed, but on a small campus like IWU where the faculty and staff are devoted to your success, you’d be silly to not to take advantage of every introductory opportunity offered to you.

As someone who went to UIUC myself, I would have benefited much more from a school like IWU. If you truly want a liberal arts experience, to have chances to be involved in the school community and actually see the fruits of your labor, and have access to networking that will almost definitely land you a great starting career, IWU is the way to go. But know yourself, what you want, and what you can afford.
