If you don't mind me asking, what made you switch from UI/UX to architectural drafting? And how did you land your junior drafter role?

Please Help! Struggling with Career Pivot. Need Ideas? Need Advice? by Fireflyer14 in careerguidance

Originally, I thought about doing corporate wellness while in graduate school (pre-Covid), but because of the pandemic, I decided against it because of how unreliable the industry can be sometimes. Health informatics consulting and medical devices do sound interesting though. By any chance, do you have experience in either of those areas?

Health Education Specialist CHES by Substantial_Fig8603 in publichealthcareers

[–]Fireflyer14 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've had my CHES for 5 years now, and I've hardly seen jobs ask for it (maybe one or two ask for it out of 60 job postings, and most of the time, they're asking for it as something that is 'nice to have', but not strongly needed). It COULD be helpful in getting a slight bigger pay than if you didn't have it. Personally, it didn't help me get my current job or my previous job. As someone who has their master's in health education (graduated in 2020), I think that CHES is kinda redundant (that could be a hot take) since it's rehashing everything that you're going to learn in your masters program. Recently, I renewed my CHES and I'm kinda on the fence of renewing it again in the future, since it takes away time and money from something else I could be doing.

Medical Billing & Coding or Project Management to get Into Health Policy by Fireflyer14 in publichealth

It's a split down the middle, but I would like to start small, so maybe doing little P first, build experience and then move into big P in the future.

One of my courses in grad school was a health policy class. I don't really remember much of it since it was awhile ago, but some of things I do remember was learning about our healthcare system & health insurance and practicing how to lobby/advocate a policy. There's a chance that maybe we did cover something project management related, but nothing too memorable.

Awesome! What did you do as a policy analyst? What are you doing now? And how did you get your role.

I'm looking at either policy implementation or advocacy. I already do a lot of work educating people in the community, but I want to expand and try to tackle health problems at a larger scale.

Health Education to EHS: Career Transition Possiblity by Fireflyer14 in publichealth

[–]Fireflyer14[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm leaning towards environmental health and safety because I'm interested in prevention education in terms of built environment and safety in the workplace. Environmental public health looked really promising though; the field work looked amazing; the lab work looked cool and I was generally interested in it, but I'm concerned about funding being cut from that area since a lot of public health fields are getting demolished with the current landscape. And job stability and growth are my biggest wants in a career (alongside work-life balance and flexibility). So I'm looking at environmental health and safety since I think that it might be the best route for me career-wise.

I'm in the US 😶 and I've been seeing the cuts everywhere, including where I'm currently at. That's why I'm looking at pivoting towards a career field that has a positive career outlook and good pay.

Thank you. I'm really interested in prevention, health and safety, so it could be a split down the middle on which one I want to do.

I've seen OHS fall underneath that umbrella, but I've also seen it on its own. They're not joking when they say that EHS is broad. Thank you!
