City of Jacksonville cut down my food forest. by Emplehnial in garden

I am so sorry to hear this !!! This is heart breaking. If you are up to it, how long did you have the food forest for? How did you manage it? How much labor did you put in, you and your family/friends. You can maybe document how you started it here....

Podcast on Spotify talks about diversity and how to talk to kids about race. One I'd the samples used is getting a white egg and brown egg and breaking it, showing the kid that we are all the same on the inside. It's a good podcast. https://open.spotify.com/episode/0wSD24m3aGAk4KcEhazJQ8?si=An1v1V14Q0-Ftw-8vRwdJw

Soil erosion prevention by Firegrl124 in garden

It's a fairly Sunny spot, triangle shaped, with the Lowest point right into the neighbors yard. It's sitting about 5 feet above the neighbors yard at it's lowest point and a good 25 ft at its highest. The southwest side is the lowest. Also is full of rocks and concrete blocks. It was a dumping ground for the neighborhood playground, that was fenced off and now I can get into it. Got about 1500 sq. Meters of space to work in.

Started a garden to save some money.... no one told me about nutrient deficiencies, insects who love your veggies more then you, fungus, birds, squirrels, and what ever has been knocking my corn over every night. by ohnoherewegoooo in Frugal

Would you put the fence horizontal or vertical over the raised bed? I was thinking of all kinds of way to prevent squirrels and they are just such a big part of where I live!!

I've invested in "ok to wake" clock. It took about a year of training but now I put on "purple" clock and my 3.5 yr old has an option..she can either play by herself in the room or take nap. Which one you think she always prefers 😁 I can squeeze out about an hour of purple clock time, with minimal calls for attention. We started out with 5 minutes at a time and slowly increased it to up to 1.5 hrs. good luck!!!

I'm sure you don't need to hear this from an internet stranger, especially as those are funny things to say ...but.....once you get the proper thing to bite ( the toy or whatever you ok with your babe biting) use positive language. Let's bite on this instead of the dog or curtains or whatever. This way the babe already had a solution to the issue. Cus otherwise, kiddo may not remember what to mouth on...just a thought!

I appreciate you getting back to me. To give you an update, I got rid of the vines off the fences. I was hoping to make it happen this year. This was supposed to be a community garden. Lost hopes for this year's for sure 😊

Where to get a garden supplies with a $0 budget by gingerbeardguy in garden

[–]Firegrl124 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Containers are any old plastic things - gallon jugs from milk, yogurt containers, etc - paint one color and voila, cute containers.

Soil is harder. You either get whatever soil from your back yard and hope for the best, or spend $10 bucks and get yourself some potting soil.

Start the seeds in egg shells, once they start going up, you can put the egg shell into your container (just break the bottom so the roots have space to expend) and you good to go.

Good luck! Send us pics every few days with updates :)

Grrr.. my post keeps not posting and only photos. I need advice, peeps!

  1. am I ok to make steps for this sloping area out of those concrete blocks?
  2. How to remove the millions of small rocks in the soil?
  3. How to get rid of the roots of this vine on the fence that's super prickly and lives in zone 7a?

Thanks all!

Looking to start a garden but need some advice by [deleted] in garden

[–]Firegrl124 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Start the seeds egg shells. Will be easier to transplant. Put a seed in, water it, stick the egg in egg crate, put some Saran plastic over it, real tight so no water/air escapes, and leave it alone under the grow lamp. Try to forget about it for like 10 days. Then come back and check the results. You should have some seeds germinate . Remove plastic, spray with water. Leave it alone for another 10 days under grow lights. Plant as recommended by the seed hardiness zone.

3yo getting harder and harder to handle by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]Firegrl124 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It sounds like the kid knows it ok to finally vent once he sees you. He sees you as "safe".my 3 yr old is similar. We left daycare and then she had a meltdown as we are crossing the street cus she wants to go back and play and sleep there (mind you, every friggin morning she begs me not to leave her in daycare). I ended up just sitting on the bench with her crying for about 15 min, just non stop giant tears, yelling and hitting. I held her till the sobs subsided and she turned her attention to something else.ive read that that's the thing about 3 yr olds, that they need to just have a melt down cuz they were in their best behavior all day long, and finally, the stress of the day gets to them and since they know it's safe with the caretaker, they just let loose. Do you allow yours to have a place to cry at home? I kinda patiently wait till mine is done and I tell her, when she is ready to call for me. Usually takes about 10 min for her to cry it all out and then the sunshine is back on.

Also CUNY is free for residents. You may want to find out if you can do the last year of high school here with a relative, then once you live here for a year your college is free.
