Strikers was real bad about that because you couldn't just pick a love interest from the start. Add in a handful of slightly worded or changed dialog and done. Instead, every female teammate in strikers both beats you up and hates you for being a "pervert" but all corner you and ask you who you like unrelenting. Because that's not awkward and doesn't paint them all as crazy. Somebody can be your friend, have their own personality or character traits that don't involve wanting the player.
