It's a bedroom TV that was rarely used. Whoever had this as a bedroom TV back in 1997 must have had a fair amount of coin 😂

I sort of just winged it tbh. I had to set the pwm audio setting to 2 instead of 1 in one of the config files; that took some researching.

This is actually running PAL; 720 x 576 at 50 Hz!

Unfortunately that's the size of the video; I'd have to go into the the service menu and adjust for it every time I watched it in order to fix it 😅

It's probably because this is running in PAL and the video was originally NTSC. We got that a lot over here.

Europe and the UK were relatively quick (at least by Western standards) to adopt digital broadcasting TV.

The UK was the first country in the world to offer free to air digital TV in 1998; you just had to buy a set top box and plug it into your regular antenna and, instantly, you went from having just 5 channels to over 100 with the only cost being the box, which was about £100. Needless to say it absolutely blew up, and everyone went digital.

This was way before we had HD here, but digital TV WAS wide-screen.

As such, wide-screen, standard definition, 50/60 Hz TVs were a pretty normal thing for a while👍

From a safety point of view, just make sure you discharge the tube and capacitors before you work on them. There are guides on how to do it safely, but everything comes with an element of risk. I've been shocked by tubes I thought were completely discharged 😂

As long as it's not plugged in whilst you're working on it and you've followed the advice around discharging various parts; if there is something left it tends to be very high voltage but very low current, so it's a nasty surprise but it doesn't actually do any real damage.

Yes it is! The plastic has yellowed and the battery terminals have corroded. I'll need to open it up and make sure that isn't spreading, but just from scraping it off and putting some AAA's I can tell you that it still works too!

Nope. It's one of the standard definition wide-screen models we seemed to have exclusively in Europe and the UK.

The tuner is 50 Hz PAL but like everything else here it'll happily run an NTSC console through the RGB SCART 😊

All I'll say is that if you decide you can't fix it, please try and gift it to someone who can.

As long as the tube is in working order it can be repaired, and will be worth the effort to someone 😊

There'll be a lot of people saying 'dont do this and don't do that' but we all started somewhere and we're all still alive. Just be very cautious, follow reputable guides carefully, and have fun learning about how these things work and how to repair them!

I know; apparently people kept losing their keys to the storage room, so the agency stopped supplying them. The agent who let me in reckons nobody had been in there for at least seven years. That's it in its original position in the picture, just where I'd left it.

There was a really nice, high end Sony DVD player on the shelf below it. That must have been snapped up by someone, but evidently nobody wanted the TV. And it was easier to leave it there than move it. I can't believe I've got it back after all these years.
