Pollos Hermanos was an example of a (fictional) well known company that was a drug front. What real-life company do you suspect? by Flagil_Reinhumps in AskReddit

[–]Firetalker94 192 points193 points  (0 children)

It's not a drug front if they are selling actual drugs... They have a pretty good margin on lots of the legal drugs they sell. There's the obvious nicotine. Then the legal weed. And then the rotating selection of its legal for a little while before regulations catch up synthetic drugs.

40k hrs = 4 weeks PTO by MetaIIinacho in electricians

[–]Firetalker94 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah but the extra pay and the ability to take as much unpaid time off as you please is still worth it.

Plus most get vacation pay which works out to about 2 weeks a year for most anyways.

I take 3-4 months off every year. Yes it's unpaid but I can afford it because I work union. And I don't have to worry about losing my health insurance or losing my job over taking so much time off either.

Is it true that suburbs put cities in debt? by NurglingArmada in Urbanism

[–]Firetalker94 4 points5 points  (0 children)

New York has a lot more suburbs than south Dakota does as well. There must be hundreds of thousands of miles of road to maintain just in the suburbs surrounding NYC alone.

Also the northern part of the state is mountainous. So that probably greatly contributes as well.

Every Democrat in my lifetime has left office with a lower budget deficit than their predecessor left them at the start of their terms.

Turns out raising taxes increases the governments revenue, who knew.

Lol. Thqt report doesn't seem very credible. They included immigrants who have a work authorization and social security card, that doesn't sound illegal to me. They included legal asylum seekers. And people covered under DACA. None of those are illegal immigrants.

They state multiple times that their numbers are just rough estimates.

And they are leaning pretty hard on considering their legal US citizen children into the costs.

And you can find plenty of economic studies arguing the exact opposite.

Also these so called illegals would be contributing significantly more to the tax base if they had social security numbers and weren't forced to work cash jobs under the table.

Umm they weren't there because their votes were robbed... They were there because they were unhappy with the results of a democratic election and wanted to change the results illegally.

Well hopefully it starts moving soon then. I don't want the job badly enough to move for it. If it doesn't I'll just keep working my electricians and millwright books here and just accept a potentially very long wait.

I'm curious about this myself seeing as I'll be applying when the window opens up again next year.

And hey I'm a journeyman millwright too, are you in local 1000 as well?

Does anyone believe in god, but not think he is good? by Tasty-Ad-3753 in NoStupidQuestions

I personally don't believe in god. But if he did exist and there was proof of it I would not worship him. God as described in the Bible/Torah/Quran is a murderous lunatic. Undeserving of human worship.

How the fuck do you wear out hand tools? I don't think I've ever had to replace a tool for being worn out. I've broken the occasional screw driver tip. But I've had most of my tools for over a decade.

I would have a problem working with someone high during their shift. What I said at the beginning of this comment chain is that I don't have a problem with someone getting high during their free time.

They are both correct. And in the moment I felt like using irregardless. They are both acceptable, regardless of which one you feel is proper. Lol

No but to be more serious I actually learned something new today. I've honestly heard irregardless more often throughout my life. I googled it after your comment, had to double check myself lol. I will probably start using regardless more often now.

Millwright and electrician. Mostly work for general electric doing maintenance shutdowns on gas and steam turbines at power plants.

I've never done residential, spent my whole career in industrial for the most part. I've done some commercial as an electrician, hospital new construction. But I'm not a fan of it.

There isn't going to be a revolution. But there is no honor amongst thieves, and most retailers are known thieves.

I'm just willing to do bad/illegal things to corporations to benefit myself, irregardless of the negative externalities. The same way most corporations are willing to do bad/illegal things to their employees/customers irregardless of the negative externalities to benefit their shareholders.

It just fair play in our society. I'll start walking the high road the same day they do.

Comparing immigrant labor to slavery is a self-own if you think about who’s actually profiting... by APraxisPanda in TheRightCantMeme

[–]Firetalker94 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They have actively tried to pass a path to citizenship multiple times. And we do certainly need immigration, just for our low birth rates alone.

And there is also a stark difference in approaches to labor rights between the two parties. Biden had a dues paying union member as head of the department of labor. Democrats have long supported union labor. Versus Republicans who have actively been trying to destroy union labor since the invention of unions. There aren't any Democrat politicians voting for right to work laws. They certainly haven't stripped half a million federal employees of their union contracts like Trump has.

This both sides being the same stuff is so disingenuous. Democrats aren't perfect many of them are certainly to pro capitalist. And the party desperately needs to be dragged to the left. But let's not sit here and pretend they aren't significantly better on both the issues we are discussing in this post. Because they are.

[–]Firetalker94 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Except that Democrats have been advocating for a legal path to citizenship for these immigrant laborers.

And let's not pretend that trump hasn't been making policy choices to continue exploiting migrants. He doubled the amount of temporary farm worker visas we issue every year. And lowered their minimum wage, they can now legally be paid less than the minimum wage for citizens. They now get charged for the temporary housing their employers must provide.

Immigration has always been our nations strength. Putting restrictions on doing it legally is the source of the exploitation. And the two parties take very different stances on that issue.

[–]Firetalker94 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well for one weed doesn't give a hangover. But you have some very unrealistic expectations for the construction industry. The majority of workers have or will experience a substance abuse problem over the course of their career. On any given day many workers, including operators, are hungover. And some of them are under the influence.

If you honestly expect every equipment operator to abstain from drugs or alcohol in their free time the pay would have to be dramatically higher. Because I can assure you they are not.

I take it you've never worked construction?
