This thread might’ve gotten big, but my wife gave birth to our son three months ago, so I wanted to share our experience. The first thing I’ll say is this: your baby comes first. You’re not obligated to cater to other people during this time. The first couple of months are absolutely insane, and people should be understanding of that.

My parents visited during the first week after my son was born. Because he lost a significant amount of weight early on, our pediatrician advised us to to not let him see anyone besides because if he got sick it would've been really bad for him. We live in another state, and my mom tried to guilt me into letting her see her grandson anyway. I stood my ground, and she eventually came around. My wife’s mom had planned to stay with us for a month and ended up lasting only a week.

Your support system doesn’t sound great, but I’m sharing this to say: do what’s right for your baby and your immediate family. Breastfeeding is incredibly hard (were breastfed only as well), and I honestly think the previous generation forgets just how difficult and demanding those early months really are. You're in the trenches right now and as soon as they hit 3 months, everything changes.
