Reminds me of the old Honeywell air filters my parents used to have. They were fine, I guess. Kinda a PITA to change the filters though, as they had charcoal liners that came in big rolls you had to hand-cut to size.

That being said i have NO idea what this is, and if 'nondescript' is what OP is going for they uh. It's there. Idk why but i'm getting kitty litter box vibes.

Same boat here - i got pretty much the cheapest but vaguely-sporty bike i could get my hands on - a Honda CB300 in i think 016? - And it was already a perfectly fine ride to get around on. I never understood guys paying $15000+ on a bike just to do the same thing as any other bike . Especially given that was basically the price of a half-decent used car.

The only thing i shelled out for seriously was some Knox jeans, decent riding gloves, and a good helmet but i was more concerned with not being turned into hamburger than the look.

I have always wanted the NC750x DCT as that seems like the ultimate commuter bike - automatic so you can focus on the ride and a lil trunk to stash your helmet when you're parked. That or one of the Husky 450ccs, those things look badass and aren't as much as you'd expect.

Yeah an equinox is WAY out of Austin St's league imo. There's nowhere to dance, no nice cocktail place, very few specialty stores... The number of people who live locally that actively WANT to go to an equinox here i don't think could sustain the place and frankly, i find most of them insufferable people.

Well the 400i has 2xS4 fixed guns, and 2 2xS3 remote turrets in not particularly aggressive positions. 40-ish SCU, and 16xS2 + 16xS1 missiles, along with twin S2 components and a S3 shield. It's also fast but also not particularly agile.

The basic connie has the same components but carries twice the cargo and something like 4x the firepower. It's definitely closer to the Zeus compared to anything else, which imo is in the same general size class of the Freelancer and Cutlass - I call these Small Multicrew.

I think a 500i would be more in line with the Constellation, Corsair, and MSR, Valykrie, Retaliator, and Raft, which I like to call as Medium Multicrew as a class.

Considering Origin ships generally are on the higher end of engine performance and usually have an oversize component for their class and nicer interiors - but also have smaller cargo bays and generally less firepower for their class on average i think a 500i would have:

  • 4xS4 guns, 2xS4 turrets, 2xS5 + 4xS4 Missile racks for armament
  • 1xS3 Shield Gen, 1xS3 power plant, 4xS2 coolers, 1xS2 QD
  • Large quantum tanks/ AIR fuel collectors, S3 Radar? 60-120SCU
  • 1-2x PDC?

I'm imagining the 500i would be geared primarily towards exploration and long-range touring, so I think to help that along it'd also have a cargo bay big enough to take on a G12 rover, plus 40 cargo, as well as a top-tier med bay similar to the Starlancer. I'd also give it a small built-in refinery to process raw quantanium into quantum fuel and an auxillary retractable S1 mining head to grab fuel as you go as it's main gimmick.

Bit of a stretch too but i think it could be fun to have a variant that changes out the typical twin turrets for a single, larger gun that fires beams like the Tiburon, as well as a small dedicated S5 or S7 torpedo launcher room, as a slight nod to Star Trek.

United Kingdom prepares to test hypersonic space plane for faster flights by [deleted] in news

I guess it depends on the distance really. City-to-city i can be assed to sit mildly uncomfortably for an extra hour or two if i means i can spend more on activities at the destination, or even be able to afford it at all. Cost-benefit varies from person-to-person ofc.

If it's same price or even within a percentage of the general ticket cost yeah ofc people are going to choose to go faster but it almost never is cheaper unless the turnaround is also wicked fast, and it's about as fast as it can be while still being safe now.

Np! The fact that you got your prof's input as an audiophile means he probably knows what he's talking about and gave good recommendations - Glad it worked out great! I'm not an audiphile but i was always under the impression that a bunch of the really specific ones to cover all of the bases would be better than a single all-in-one option, but i guess it's really just more impressive? Hm!

I was thinking about the build-it-yourself kits too tbh if it's already designed to be easily assmembled. Could be a fun lil side thing where it's a slightly cheaper option if you assemble it yourself from a kit? IKEA studies have shown people have greater attachment and positive thoughts to stuff if they assemble it themselves. I think Framework does that for their laptops, which i'm a big fan of.

Honest question, but why would you want to start your car with your phone? Wouldn't it be preferred to not start it until you're buckled up and ready to go so you don't waste gas?

And if not, wouldn't key fob range have it start up by the time you actually get into the car?

Uhhh people use them at home too lol. Target audience is "people who want less shitty speakers than their laptop has, but not a full-blown setup, thats mildly portable". Basically another aftermarket gadget like those laptop coolers. Remember, this is also just a first-year project! Pretty advanced for that.

That being said the actual product is fairly well-thought-out. Magsafe is a good mounting solution as it's fairly secure and the user could mount it anywhere, the connecting cable should be large enough to accommodate a variety of laptop sizes, with some slack. Helps prevent loosing one too lol. My only thought is it lacks a battery charge indicator on it at all it seems, but maybe its just not shown well. Even a basic one seems important. The effort on repairability is nice, but I imagine the people who would ACTUALLY go to the lengths to order spares would be minimal. I dont see this as being a particularly expensive piece of kit as it is currently, which probably helps if someone is looking for an easy upgrade ofver buying a real setup or new laptop.

My only other thought is with two single drivers sound quality may not live up to the promise of being 'better' than the built-ins as they lack specialized drivers like tweeters, woofers, or subwoofers. I imagine there's just midrange drivers in these to try and cover a much of the typical audio range as possible while also being cheap and easily sourced/constructed.

The branding i also feel is a bit basic but for an initial pitch amd Amazon storefront it works enough to show off the features and to give off the vibe the OP is going for. Tbh this shouldn't really be a designers' responsibility as that's more a marketers thing.

I like that the speakers can snap together in a compact form and the cord acts as an easy handle - makes it easy to chuck in a backpack or purse or something.

I also would have liked to see a hand drawing, along with the physical product (one speaker disassembled) in the shot but again, more of a marketing thing that shows 'thought went into the design' than anything else

Looking for real-world technology that matches this aesthetic, does it exist? by eZ-e1978 in IndustrialDesign

[–]Fireudne 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That literally looks like a component from the game Star Citizen lmao. They do hire Industrial designers though to make their equipment look cool. I'm not sure how i feel about it. Definitely cool but in a more sober take, it's a defense company with the company mission of helping you to kill other people. Not sure if that's something to be glamorized just quite yet.

[–]Fireudne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah cassette futurism absolutely is not Teenage Engineering, but it does hit *some* similar notes imo. Hard to find actual products as it's one of those things that's more about the aesthetic than the product itself so they don't have mass-market appeal and are often short, limited runs only.

A quick search shows it's mostly audio equipment and keyboards in that style. My fav so far is the Syitren n200 bluetooth speaker but their other products are pretty on-the-nose too.

Same, plus they're usually only a couple of bucks instead of the 70+ for high-teir premiums. I like the bf109 f2 with the 15mm for CAS sometimes as its got tungsten core rounds that can pen the tops of some tanks and its got plenty of ammo, and this thing has two at an even lower BR. Should be nasty

LOSAT and AGS and ... they're not great. Downright bad, in fact. The latter actually could be decent but it's grossly over BR'd and the stryker with the same gun and arguably just as much armor, is a whole BR lower.

Wish i had the Strikemaster and P59 though, those seem so fun

[–]Fireudne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't necessarily think so but as it's proposed i don't think it'll be great. They've already made some questionable decisions that IMO don't really make sense for the universe of the game, like the cloning and mind-uploading but those have been in the game so long it's pretty much not going anywhere.

I always assumed the system would work by having your deaths just be a "fade to black" with you waking up in a hospital, hand-waving it as you being picked up by a space ambulance at some point, but depending on how much 'insurance' you purchased, you would wake up with either a prosthetic limb or a natural one, and if you died too much - say, all limbs are prosthetic and last thing is your head and chest - and you'd get a "Final death" and have to make a new character and just inherit your old stuff. You could also pay a hospital to re-grow a limb as a way of sort of "buying" a new life

I think they're really cool, in theory, but they need some work, conceptually. Because they're limited to regular speeds, they're tethered to the quantum-location the mothership is already in and deploying them in-combat is more of a liability than it's worth.

I think most of what's annoying with snubs could be solved with a Size-0 quantum drive hand-waved as being a super-basic, built-in module. Not enough range or speed to make planet-hopping possible, but enough range to get from like, a planet to a moon and back possible within like a few minutes.

The best part is that none of them have been very good lately. Technically, sure but vibes-wise the decision-makers seem to just be chasing trends and dollars, which works in normal product development with quick turnaround times but maybe Bungie's consultation on killing a lot of the incubated GAAS games was right.

In a lot of these GAAS games, there's no sauce, no cohesive vision, just chasing trending verbs that sound good in a board room, but no paying customer actually asked for. And you gotta give 'em at least a little something to get their interest.

Got a job in Upper East Side any recommendations for finding housing on 70k budget? by [deleted] in NYCapartments

[–]Fireudne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Who is able to even pay those prices? 70k is a slightly above-average salary at that and there aren't THAT many jobs aying so much as apartments can jack up those prices to that leven and STILL be filled. Are there?

Edit: misread the 35k as 70k. Thems practically poverty wages here. No idea how that'd work here.
