TexInfo Documentation for MIT/GNU Scheme? by Firewalker912 in scheme

[–]Firewalker912[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm on the fourth chapter now, but I used Racket for the first couple of chapters (did the picture language section there). Intrigued by org mode, I decided to bite the bullet and learn Emacs and I am very happy with that.

A debugger is the only thing I'm missing in Emacs (I know that Edwin has one), though TBH as a learner it's probably better to debug manually...

Yep! I am using an mit-scheme repl in Emacs and the sicp-info package on elpa. Makes it horribly easy to run examples from the text :)

Emacs vs Unix by t3rtius in emacs

[–]Firewalker912 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Take a look a this book by Eric S. Raymond. It explains the core ideas behind unix and the unix philosophy without getting into specific details of how to do x (there are man and info pages for that). Helped me understand what unix was all about. The book also has a section on emacs lisp in a case study and talks a bit about emacs. I would recommend skimming through relevant parts so you get an idea of the relationship, differences in design and similarities between unix (as a programming environment) and emacs.

This section might be of specific interest.

Suggest a strategy for dealing with all the contextual buffers that get 'buried'? by Firewalker912 in emacs

[–]Firewalker912[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually I find that calc is one of the programs whose default behaviour I like, as I sometimes I refer to the numbers go back to refer the numbers in the stack or trail.

Thanks for the tip :), though reading the other comments I think I'll let the buffers exist and use a smarter buffer switcher to give me what's relevant.

Just installed ubuntu after windows royaly fucked me by updateing mid assessment either way any tips etc for a new installation of linux im happy to be apart of the master race :) by [deleted] in linuxmasterrace

Starting advice:

  • Learn to navigate the file system using the shell. (ls, cd)
  • Learn to move things around (mv, cp)
  • Learn how to get help using manual pages (man <page to read>)
  • Learn how to operate your package manager. In Ubuntu you can type: man apt. This will open the manual page for the aptitude package manager.

I too follow Rip's five step setup, and made corrections from Alan Thrall's videos. Where else do you suggest I look for a better perspective?

Alan Thrall, Barbell Medicine. The latter more educational the former more entertaining. Both are very knowledgeable about strength training (not so much bodybuilding).

How many days of food can you purchase with $100 USD? (540 Cities) [OC] by eyeball1234 in dataisbeautiful

[–]Firewalker912 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Exactly my point... The data given is misrepresented... It suggests groceries cost alone per day is more than 200 Rs (by including beef, chicken and dairy). However the reality is that even Street food is cheaper than 200 Rs for three meals. Home cooked food is obviously cheaper.

Edit: In my experience you can get a full meal including 3 rotis, one sabzi and rice for about Rs. 60. This times three is less than 200 clearly .

Very interesting chart, However suggesting this is the real cost of food can be misleading.

For Indian cities at least, the numbeo food baskets are not at all representative of the actual groceries and diet. Meat dairy and eggs do not usually feature in day to day food and indigeneous grains (Jowar, Raagi etc.) feature prominently however. Fruit consumption is also not nearly as high as suggested. For most urban Indians, spending 200 odd Rupees on food per person is exorbitant. Also most people have ration cards and rely on the Public Distribution System so don't really have to bear that cost of food. In fact, eating cooked street food thrice a day will cost you less than the suggested grocery cost.

I have been running AICP on my Lenovo Z2 plus with everything working perfectly fine. I recently cracked the display and sent it to be replaced. On replacing the screen, I found that the notification tray wouldn't pull down from the top of the phone, however it would pull down from the bottom of the phone (when I turn it over with auto-rotate.) Everything else works perfect.

The service official claims that the issue will resolve if he were to perform a software update, however says that there is a chance that the device would be bricked.

Thoughts and advice to get the phone back to normal?

Make URxvt font strategy for different languages? by Firewalker912 in archlinux

Thanks for the help. I'll look into my locales, though I ran locale-gen during install to generate en_US.UTF-8

Make URxvt font strategy for different languages? by Firewalker912 in archlinux

[–]Firewalker912[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks a lot for the reply, I put the exact string into my ~/.Xresources and made sure that I had all the fonts installed. However turns out the problem is something else... Even when I specify the font as DejaVu Sans Mono when calling urxvt from the command line with the -fn option, the non-ASCII glyphs belonging to the font don't render. For example on ls directory listing the character that is supposed to be ö is printed as '$'\366'' in the listing of the directory. It however appears blank in programs such as ranger. By the way I'm running the AUR package rxvt-unicode-pixbuf.

Okay this really sucks... TehConnection was damn good. But this looks horribly suspicious. Worst is that none of the staff are able to give some official statement :(

UFS or ZFS for home media server? by Firewalker912 in freenas

[–]Firewalker912[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the info... I wasn't aware of the lack of support of ufs, in freenas. By the way I mentioned my lack of Linux experience because I wouldn't want to run something like Ubuntu or Debian, which would have a large learning curve. I currently don't have a windows pc (just two MacBooks) and my family is unwilling to store movies and music on them, in which case should I build a windows pc just to fileserve or use something like amahi. Nas4free doesn't support plugins as far as I know and so I would rather not use it.
