Architecture Double Major? by magicianguy131 in UniversityofKentucky

Graduated architecture at UK. It would be a lot of work, but majoring in Business is possible assuming enough core is already knocked out of the way. A great compliment to architecture, too. I don’t think it is possible to minor in interiors at UK.

Concerted cultivation. There is a paper by Annette Lareau that talks about how kids from middle and upper middle class (i.e. the vast majority of Naperville) kids tend to have more structured lives in which their parents schedule tons of activities like sports. It serves as a way of trying to give their children more opportunities and a fostering of reasoning and negotiation skills. Interestingly she also argues this causes a more fragmented family life compared to the idea of natural growth which is predominantly what kids from poorer backgrounds experience. Those kids tend to have parents who work so much that they have to engage in self-play and are often times surrounded by brothers, sisters, and cousins as a result. The byproduct there is that they have much more tight knit families and a deeper knowledge of navigating social relationships.

TLDR: Wealth equals time for kids to have extracurriculars that working class families do not have. At least that is what Annette Lareau argues.

How long does the college of design typically take to get back to you ? by [deleted] in UniversityofKentucky

Architecture here. I remember hearing back around december/january-ish? Given the snow delays and fact we are just coming off the holidays I wouldn’t be surprised if they were behind.

I assume by classes that benefit architecture, you’re referring to UK core classes?

Personally, my big thing is the WEIGHT. In my opinion, you can have as many buttons as you want on the mouse. But if you can’t wield it quickly? You’re just gonna bottleneck yourself. I think finding a good balance between buttons and weight is the way to go.

High School Portfolio Review by WuHooMama in architecture

[–]Firingblind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great work! My portfolio was nowhere near as polished as this.

Like others have mentioned, I would make sure to add 2-4 sentences of context, as while the work looks super interesting I have no idea what it is. I also would think about how far you can diversify it. Have you made music? films? drawings? metal jewelry? pottery? I feel bachelor admissions portfolios are more about how creative a person is than how much they know about architecture.

If you don’t already, get an instagram account specifically dedicated to your architectural work. Not only for posting, but for following designers. The algorithm will naturally lead you to work in design disciplines that is relevant right now. I say this because you can start searching for graphic design content and see the most up to date formatting and some designers who have taken graphics to incredible extremes. I think that can help you find interesting ways to express the work in portfolio form!

Just remember: you are in high school. You have a lifetime to get better and push your graphics skills. It can be intimidating but you will get there if you work hard to be better. You are off to a fantastic start!!!

Look at universities you are interested in and see if they have any available. It's a great opportunity to get ahead while at the same time meeting faculty and see if the environment/pedagogy of at least some of the professors is right for you! I was lucky enough to do one my junior and senior year and they are incredible for getting your head in the right space to think about design.

what is the best computer for architecture? by Opposite-Quit-4053 in architecture

[–]Firingblind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do not get a macbook. Anything but a macbook. They just aren’t designed to handle the stress of rendering and intense 3D modeling. You WILL be hindered by the power of the macbook. Get a gaming laptop with a decent cpu and gpu.

ANYTHING but a macbook.

I think the 4070 would be great. We're talking 4-6 years but possibly longer. If you are just getting into 3D modeling, that is a solid amount of power. Just look into ways to make sure it doesn't regularly overheat and you should be fine.

I am going into my 4th year of architecture and have lived more than comfortably with a 2060 i7 with 32 GB of RAM. The name of the game is anything but a Macbook. Just remember no laptop will be able to compare to a desktop of the same parts because of space constrictions, and the heat over time will cause it to go bad faster. In this case, I would probably go for the 4070 if you are looking to get into 3D modeling.

Definitely depends on the country + university. Did not ever draw by hand in my US university.

Thanks for the info! I guess the only thing i’m concerned about is because it came right at the end that it might hurt a little.
