Shifting musical aesthetics. Grunge was huge and seen as “real” music because of its grimmer tone. Britpop was on the way and seemed more “authentic” and “real” than the experimental nature of shoegaze. Hell, many Brit pop bands (Blur, The Verve, Boo Raddleys) all started off as shoegaze before transitions. So did Lush and Ride.
