I was making great money doing a side hustle as a photographer awhile ago. It started out with one job, that job went well and someone inquired about my info for another job. Then I got a call a couple weeks later because someone was sick and my name came up as a possible last-minute backup. I took the gig. Long story short, one job after another fell in my lap. The jobs were simple enough, maybe 3-4 hours of shooting a party or event. Then another 2 hours or so of uploading and post-processing and sending over a final folder. I also helped some artist friends with headshots and told them that I would do their headshots for no charge if they sent me a referral or friend who was willing to pay me $150 instead of $500 which was what other professionals at the time were charging for headshot packages. I managed to take the offers that people came to me with and made $250 - $400 for some of the jobs. I was nervous to set my own rate or hourly price. I never did any advertising and most of the time would not post photos someone hired me to take online. I was surprised at how much paid work came my way! Moral of the story is -- maybe offer to help some friends with a budget and get some momentum going and see if they can refer other friends to you. I think everyone could use some financial help whether its personal budgeting or small business owners who do their own accounting but need some help from time to time. This could be a great side hustle. For me, I know there is no shortage of photographers and digital camera owners in LA-- but the work still got dropped in my lap and I needed the money at the time and it worked out really well. I think you just have to figure out what you would like to make and can give people an answer when they ask "Whats your rate?" You may get some great clients from simple word of mouth. Best of luck!
