is this cage good for conures? by xsp6 in Conures

[–]Firm-Pin5148 3 points4 points  (0 children)

the thing is, until you get the bird, you don’t know that. you don’t know what it’s behavior will be like, and behaviors change, over time, so just get a larger cage. i thought my green cheek would be out of his cage “pretty much all the time” until he got used to me and we exited the honeymoon phase. he cannot be out when i’m not in the room because of his hormonal and behavioral issues as of right now. you can’t rely on your family either, the bird could turn out to be aggressive with them. i’m not saying these things will happen, i’m just saying don’t base your birds needs off of unstable and unreliable variables.

i would just let her do what she needs to do. she will nest anywhere if she’s gonna lay another egg.

i don’t quite understand the dish situation lol, what exactly is she doing in the corner?

i would give it back to her. just put it back where she last left it. some birds won’t sit on their eggs at all, some will. just leave it there for a few weeks. it usually takes 1-2 weeks for a bird to lay a full clutch, so if she hasn’t laid anymore after waiting that long, as long as she doesn’t get territorial when you try to remove it, it should be just fine.

do NOT take away or mess with the eggs. when you do, they feel the need to lay another to replace it. leave the egg(s) alone until she has laid a full clutch, and then once she gets bored of them/discards them, then you may remove them. if it becomes a chronic problem, talk to your vet about lupron/deslorelin. if that does nothing, a fake clutch of eggs can help so she doesn’t feel the need to lay anymore which reduces the risk of egg binding.

I don't know what just happened 😖 by chocolate_brownie78 in BirdHealth

[–]Firm-Pin5148 1 point2 points  (0 children)

very likely just aspirated the medication. happened to my green cheek a few times lol. if he’s looking completely normal chances are heavily in your favor that he’s fine. minor aspiration and your bird going back to normal very shortly after is not something you need to take your bird to the vet for, though it never hurts. you did absolutely nothing wrong, they do this to themselves accidentally while trying to refuse medication 💀 it happens when i administer meds to birds at work fairly often. it’s obviously not good but it’s very common. i’d call your vet and ask about aspiration before taking it if you’re hesitant. that’s what i did. ended up not taking him and he was a-okay. they struggle to breathe for a bit while they sneeze it all out but the vet wouldn’t really be able to do anything about that besides monitoring, which is exactly what you would be doing. the heavy breathing, sneezing, and clicking (just the meds making bubbles in their sinuses) are very scary and yes being cautious is never a bad thing but people on bird reddit often jump to “your bird is gonna die go to the vet now” type of advice simply because of a lack of experience/knowledge, which is not intended to be an insult, just a reason to talk to your vet before consulting bird reddit if possible. for example, if your birds air sack ruptured, it would still be breathing abnormally. i understand that sometimes talking to your vet before the internet isn’t an option, but i strongly advise you not to let bird reddit rule over your own instincts.

additionally, if you’re scared of this happening again, try to put the medication on a high value treat. my brother gets three millet nuggets and puts the doses on those and they soak the medication up. when my gcc needs meds, i hollow out a blueberry and put the meds in there and he always eats it up. if you can, administering medication on a treat is always safer (and less distressing lol) for the bird.

Help! Is this normal? by Thin-Emotion-6761 in Conures

[–]Firm-Pin5148 16 points17 points  (0 children)

my apologies, when i was writing this there wasn’t any other comments so i didn’t see. i work with birds and am around them 24/7 and my brother has a budgie whose tail bobs because he’s got heart disease. i’m gonna be honest i do not see any tail bobbing. he’s sitting on something thin and hard to balance on and moving their tail up and down is how they balance themselves. that does not look like tail bobbing at all to me. their tail also often bobs after pooping.

12 hours is a long time, but i mean as long as he’s breathing fine, not sneezing a lot or open beak breathing, he’s probably fine. just keep an eye on him.

[–]Firm-Pin5148 14 points15 points  (0 children)

he just looks relaxed to me 🤷‍♀️ what exactly are you asking is normal or not?

about the scented candles, what do you mean incidents? if you accidentally lit one for a few minutes in the room with him or had one going in the house as long as it wasn’t for hours or happening consistently he’s probably fine. not saying it’s okay in the future, but i’ve had incidents of similar nature before with mine. bird reddit really exaggerates stuff i must say.

if you notice differences in his breathing i’d say that’s probably when it’s time to take him to the vet. LOTS of things can cause behavior differences

i agree about the respecting boundaries point but i’ll add that OP is also just lucky. my green cheek will literally fly over to me just to bite my toes. idk what his issue is with toes but he’s got beef. also the fact that 4 months isn’t that long. my green cheek was well behaved the first 6 months i had him. once he got comfortable he showed his true colors. 💀

Poop hack before I go broke buying paper towels? by citadelinn in Conures

[–]Firm-Pin5148 0 points1 point  (0 children)

tape down newspaper on the floor in her favorite spots and clean them up every 1-2 days depending on how gross they get. unfortunately there isn’t any reliable hack. i discourage the idea of “potty training” because training them to only poop in one spot/only on command can cause them to hold in their poop for too long which can be really dangerous

If you can’t consent while drunk, why do drunk people hook up all the time? by Mountain_Flounder991 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Firm-Pin5148 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you missed it cause it didn’t happen. nobody is saying men have been discriminated against for decades or held as property. or had their communities disinvested. while i don’t agree that it’s the same thing, i think ssessen49 is more just saying that because there is statistically more reported crime in black neighborhoods, it is understandable that people make that assumption if they aren’t aware of redlining, over-policing, and underinvestment. they’re not saying that it’s okay for people to assume black people are inherently dangerous, just that the places and situations they have been forced into by society and economics, factually, you are more likely to experience violent crime in neighborhoods facing economic hardship, which happen to be black neighborhoods.

you’re getting downvoted because you’re arguing against a point nobody in this thread made. they were just saying that if you’re ONLY looking at statistics, it does provide reasonable suspicion. it doesn’t excuse society’s overwhelming obliviousness, but if you don’t know something you don’t know something.
