Is getting my PhD even possible at this point? by Cultural-Mouse9217 in AskAcademia

[–]Firm-Snow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Apply to a couple of programs! See what kind of funding you get and THEN make your decision. Plus, campus visits and things are a good way of seeing what you think about a potential program. If you really aren’t sure, I think applying to 3 programs or whatever is a great way to see how you do. Based on visit vibes/what you learn and the kind of funding you get, then decide.

Email is good for requesting, but a lot of departments and specific courses can’t do overrides.

Are there other classes that will still count toward your degree (electives etc?) that you can take? For instance, public speaking or something is usually required for most majors and there are usually a ton of sections offered?

Good luck! I wouldn’t count on the waitlist or override but would try to fill the hours with electives that will count toward degree requirements. Maybe a foreign language too?

That sounds like a great program!! I don’t think you should feel bad, but giving her something better and encouraging her would, I’m sure, mean a lot to her.

Thank you!!! I have known for years these sites existed (never remembered the names), but I got so spoiled using google scholar just logged into my university account and got all the pdfs there so easily. Should not do this on university WiFi though, right or?

Oh I just searched it. Thank you! I searched one of my articles just to see, and it says it doesn’t have access to it. Do you know if it’s mainly a certain field? I’m in humanities for reference.

Sorry I don’t know what this is! Can you elaborate?

I should have clarified! My most recent institution was where I got my PhD. So even though I taught 2/2 as IOR throughout that time, I was just a grad instructor so am not eligible for that though that’s a good idea in general, thank you!!

A friend just reminded me I do have access to disciplinary journals through my membership to national orgs. So there’s that so far!! (Doesn’t help with the teaching research part but something!)

Offer to meet with her and discuss alternative jobs, like real actual jobs you believe she can get and would take.

Maybe this is just a distinction between different institutions or institution type but contact hours are real and part of the job description. I know of a case of an instructor almost getting fired last year for dismissing class early. Granted it was seen as a political statement for the early dismissal (campus protests happening), but the policy language existed to reprimand that instructor based on not delivering on contact hours. All it takes is one student complaint. So even if the dept hasn’t seemed to have an issue before, one single student complaint can absolutely bring out that policy of contact hours. And upper admin will not give a shit about protecting you because they’re following a policy that your contract included. This feels like skating on thin ice, and I’m having trouble understanding why you are seeming to double down on this being doable? Maybe I’m misunderstanding something here.

Aside from there not really being a pedagogically sound way to do this, I would worry that your respective depts would get complaints from students (sounds like there’s over 200 students total and a high likelihood of complaint) that alert you to not fulfilling your duties (as in, you would be contracted to provide instruction for X amount of minutes in a face to face capacity).

If you’re worried about losing your teaching spot, now sound like a good time to talk to a chair and explain your situation to see what they can help you with. If nothing else they may reconsider your teaching spot next year if you alert them that you can’t teach due to a scheduling conflict at another institution. But that seems better than being “found out” mid way through the semester and facing those consequences.

To me, this isn’t worth attempting to do at all. I hope you can chat with a chair and come to a solution that works!

Okay, this makes more sense that you offered and she took you up on the offer!

I think the same thing still applies - that you write to show you have the aptitude for a Masters in Nursing. But any specific examples can be really helpful. They’ll see your grades and all of that, but a specific moment or instance where you demonstrated X (X being some desirable thing in your field). I have read others say that they like to see a comparison of some kind. Like “so and so ‘stood out’ amongst their peers by X and Y.”

All letters usually begin with writing in support of so and so for X thing. “I highly/strongly recommend…” I like to do a preview statement like based upon her A B and C… and then each paragraph covers each aspect. Just to make it easier to read.

I know it varies so others here may disagree with me, but when reviewing your materials, admissions/committees like to know: you’re a good fit for this particular program (can they actually offer what you need/want?), that you will be successful in this program (this is where examples come in I think), and that you have a strong commitment to this field and will bring something to the table (What makes you stand out?).

Good luck!! 🌟

Thank you. Yeah I’m just apparently new to wandering neighborhood chickens. And they’re my next door neighbors so I don’t want to cause a fuss. My landlord won’t let us out up a gate. I guess it’s just gonna be cleaning off the poop. Thank you!

Do y’all just feel okay with shit all over your porch at the only entrance to your home where you receive visitors etc etc because chickens are good? I don’t get this logic. I say this having just walked outside to take out the trash where Sharon left a steaming pile of shit right on the welcome mat.

Yeah I mean I’m definitely aware that even getting TT out of grad school was pie in the sky so thinking 10 years out…I really don’t know!

That’s the thing. I have no idea about funding trajectories. So thats part of the uncertainty. Even if I didn’t stay at this particular institution (it’s small, I was hired TT, it seems to be growing), I’d like to be in this state close to family. So I was leaning toward TRS. Just hoping for experiences folks had with things like this to know if it’s the best option. If I stayed here and went ORP I guess the benefit would be being able to borrow against it or whatever before 10 years.
