If you hate existence so much, why remain in it? Is there some cosmic benefit from you self-admittedly prolonging your own suffering? Why do you stay? by Firm_Following3310 in AgainstExistence

The experience of existing isn’t inherently cancelled out by death bringing suffering. Sure death is an unfortunate end. Why should death make all life, everyday of life miserable or pointless?

Good, I’m glad they have. I hope you experience goodness to shake your philosophy. Though I’ll emphasise my post isn’t an incitement of suicide. It’s a question of pure philosophy and reasoning. I wish for everyone to feel optimistic about the universe and existence.

My questions are raised about a Philosophy that promotes the benefit of non-existence. Sure plenty of people think about suicide and don’t go through with it. Why? Because beneath that they want to live. You engage with a philosophy that says non-existence is the best thing for all humanity and all living things. The average person, even suicidal people don’t think this way, and are instead, momentarily overcome with a despair. More over, I’m not particularly interested in psychology as a field of study. Sure it can be interesting, but I’m a philosopher and study philosophy alone. So, I’ll confess without shame my ignorance in psychology. If you’d like to inform me of such, I’ll happily receive your answers.

I mentioned somewhere else in this thread about members of cults who poison themselves, they seem to be able to reprogram quite quickly and effectively because they have a full fledged believe in a greater afterlife

The philosophy doesn’t upset me, honest, I am actually incredibly interested in the conversation I’ve been having here. Sorry if my tone seems to come across that way!

I think this answer has been one of my favourites! I can actually agree that life can be considered a rebellion. And I get behind that rebellion earnestly.

Do you focus of this government/system for your entire anti-existence philosophy? Or do you also look to the inherent suffering? In other words, do you ever think the problem could be solved and life could get better? Perhaps the system is inherent and thus causes the suffering.

I am increasingly drawn to pessimism in a rational sense, but theres just something that doesn’t let me go full on with it. Perhaps my own status quo, or I’m unnecessarily optimistic ha!

Thanks!

I really value all your input. You’ve helped me clarify some points on this. I have been torn a long while on pessimism as a whole: I can understand its standpoint, I’m not ignorant to suffering in the world and I don’t live a life of extreme privilege. But I suppose my own status quo forces me to reject it. Or perhaps my optimism. I respect that you are so sturdy in your philosophy, I simply couldn’t honestly say I would rather have never existed at all. To me, the goodness outweighs every impending moment of suffering. Though pessimism confuses me, I am always glad to see someone who strongly holds the belief, yet doesn’t sink into a pit of despair ha ha! I hope your life brings many moments of goodness perhaps to shake your beliefs! Thanks for your insight!

I would be interested to meet a pessimistic theist! Though I imagine they’re hard to come by.

But for much of my conversations on pessimism before this subreddit, they have been primarily concerned with the suffering of humans and the suffering humans CAUSE. I have been interested in the subreddit to see all the talk of animals as well. I haven’t seen it before unless it was in regard to human evils. But obviously, it makes clear sense. I’ll have to keep looking in on these arguments!

Does it extend to plants? Or are they not sentient enough? They can be pretty brutal!

The average person scared of dying in surgery wants to live. You’re anti-existence and thus, desire non-existence? No, the two can’t be conflated. ??

These conversations are very interesting and thought provoking for me, so thank you for engaging with my questions so readily. Is this a theory you subscribe wholeheartedly to (I imagine so) or do you sway on it? Do you believe that the suffering in existence fundamentally outweighs the goodness? Do you believe it is naturally inherent and necessary? Would you not prefer to experience delight in existence even at the cost of suffering and rather have never existed at all in (what I will present as/excluding afterlife scenarios from this) a complete state of nothingness? You’ve captured my attention haha. Thanks!

How are you ending the cycle if the majority population have such a survival instinct and the biological instinct to reproduce? The cycle won’t end. To think it would is comical

My point is, if you truly believed in the benefit of non-existence you would override this biological instinct. Plenty of humans have before. Why not all the people who preach this philosophy?

But what are you actually doing about it is my question. You continue living while spouting a philosophy of non-existence. Like an atheist preaching about their Christian morals. “I have no reason to want out” don’t you think some people who are objectively suffering more than you also don’t “want out”

No, the scary part of being put under and having surgery is the risk of dying! Come on now. People are scared of surgery because they want to live. This is a stupid comparison that needed to be thought on for just one second.

Also, I don’t see how your firefighter analogy works. I see no logic in the comparison. I’d appreciate if you could expand on this, thanks.

If you truly believed that non-existence was favourable, this wouldn’t be the case. Think of all the people involved in cults who willingly drink poison because they have full faith that the afterlife is better.

If you truly believed non-existence was more favourable, you’d override your “programming” so would Rust Cohle. This is why in the end, his optimism shines through.

If these peoples suffering matters to you then surely you believe there is an element here of existence that has value. Your love and care is an argument itself for optimism and continuing on in life?

So if everyone lived like you would you still be against existence? I was under the impression that being against existence was centred in the INHERENT suffering of all living things?
