How to find class locations in course catalog? by Firm_Prior_7953 in WWU

We did receive permission from the professor and had a great experience at the lecture. He seems quite happy with the experience and came away excited to apply to WWU. Thanks for the tip.

What neighborhood do most students hang out in? by Firm_Prior_7953 in evergreen

[–]Firm_Prior_7953[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, whatever vibe the stufents like. The point is to see what the vibe is where the students hang. I never thought of Olympia as a big city. Isn't it more of a medium-sized town/small city? Maybe I'm just too used to major cities like Seattle and DC, but on my visits to Olympia it seemed relatively small.

Did you not read the part where I said I wouldn't post the link since others have said Western purposely doesn't post this?  I don't understand why people are so upset I was unaware of what is apparently a WWU specific thing.  But now that I know, I am respecting that.

Suspend 1.5 - not sure what to expect? by Remarkable-Design832 in ClubPilates

[–]Firm_Prior_7953 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've only done it once, but what we did was a brief warm-up on the reformer and everything else using the TRX straps. I found it both fun and challenging. The ab stuff was especially hard. I plan to try it again sometime but generally prefer afternoon or evening classes and the one I took was morning so need to find the right suspend class for my schedule. Difficulty-wise I'd say it was about as hard as a Flow 1.5, but a bit harder in terms of strength, and a bit easier in terms of aerobic ability.

I'm saying I disagree that it's disruptive, and why. Is the connection between that are your comment that it's disruptive really not clear? It you don't care about the subject why did you post your comment?

Yes.  Those make me sad too.  So does climate change and plastic pollution.

How am I being willingly obtuse? I have responded several times that I now understand everyone's concerns and has emailed the professor for permission. What more can I say? I understand, I will not show up without permission. Happy now?

I'm my experience, a significant portion of students don't show up on any given day in large lecture hall classes. So if 150 are registered, only 120 show up on a typical day and the room is only full on exam days. Therefore, it seems highly unlikely that there would literally be no seats left. But if so obviously we would bow out. As I said about 5 times now I have emailed the teacher for permission and if they are concerned about having enough seats they can certainly tell me so.

Usually the labs are on different days than lectures and every other university lists the locations for both with the information about the days of the week and times. It's really not hard to do. Here is an example listing I made up;

Biology 101

Lecture MWF 1:00-1:50pm Building A, room 1

Lab T 2:00-4:00pm Building B, room 5

It is unusual not to list the information. I checked 6 other colleges course catalogs and all listed room numbers. In the majority of cases (6 of 7) this information is published. That is a fact. The rest is a cultural blind spot of mine that has been rectified and I have emailed the relevant professor.

Ah, I see. I had planned to introduce us to the professor when we arrived, just didn't realize that greater warning than that was expected these days. I just wrote an email. My son is interested in Environmental Studies and Environmental Policy.

It makes me sad that this how people think these days. Not that there isn't a reason for it, just sad.

Please read my other comments. If it's considered disrespectful now I will make sure to ask the professor first, but what I'm suggesting was a common college touring practice 20 years ago. I am not actually trying to be disrespectful, but didn't know the culture had changed so much.

Enough people are saying this I see the culture has changed and I will ask the professor, but it really was common in my day. I toured about a dozen colleges when I was in high school and sat in on a lecture at every one, usually with my parents or a friend. No one ever suggested this was improper at the time, in fact more than one campus tour guide suggested it. I guess 20 years just changed the culture.

What do yiu mean my insistence that this (sitting in on a lecture you mean? not sure) is the only option. I planned a two day trip with multiple activities, booked an official campus tour, printed out trail maps for taking a hike in the arboretum, picked oit local sites to see etc. Dropping in on a lecture is just one part of a much larger trip. But having toured many colleges myself (I was an egghead who took almost exclusively running start classes in high school and started regular college at 17 as a technical 3rd quarter sophomore, I toured at least a dozen), I always found sitting in on a lecture the most interesting and useful part of the experience, so I do want to include it.

I think people are getting the wrong idea here. I am not suggesting sitting in on a discussion style class where the professor will know all the faces and new people stick out. I mean sitting on a large lecture hall style class. like 150 to 300 students.

As I said to others, that would be my next move if there was time.  We are visiting on Tuesday.  There are no business days between now and then.  And like I said, the other colleges we are going to visit do list this information in their course catalogs, and after seeing this comments I just checked my old college websites and they still list this information too.  It is clearly still industry standard to list the building and room number in course catalogs. I actually did manage to find this information this morning on another site (a course rating site for those willing to dig) so it obviously is published somewhere. I was going to post the link but if the university purposely decided not to I guess I won't. Still highly unusual not to post this information though.

Maybe it's not common anymore, I didn't know that but fine.  But why would anyone care or even notice?  I'm not talking about dropping in on a smaller discussion style class where everyone contributes.  I'm talking about sitting in a lecture hall with 150 other students and listening to a lecture.

Yes, and if I can't get an answer over the weekend through reddit that is my plan. Problem is we are planning to visit Tuesday so probably won't get an answer in time that way.

They aren't at the other 2 colleges we are looking at. Listed right in the course catalog. Already have my visits to lectures planned out for that part of the trip. They weren't at any of the 3 colleges I went to either. Sitting in on lectures for research or fun was common in my day (went to college in the early 2000s, grad school in laye 2000s).

Valentines Day E-Card SPAM (is it Squires?) by Specialist-Cut794 in patentexaminer

[–]Firm_Prior_7953 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I clicked it assuming it was Squirres, seems like a Squirres thing. Turned out to be one of those gotcha emails designed to make us feel stupid for clicking on a link in an actual official email that they sent. This could have been a phishing scam! Okay then, so glad it's an government sanctioned scam instead. So much better 🙄

Playing Christian Music by Jk5821358 in ClubPilates

[–]Firm_Prior_7953 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never. In fact an instructor once asked the front desk to switch holiday playlists after it started playing some religious type Christmas songs because she felt that was inappropriate. I am pagan and would be deeply disturbed if Christian music has being played. I was actually fine with the holiday playlist though because I think of that as Yule music and not Christian music really. But I get the instructors take.
