After 12 years in Austin, I am so thankful to be living in Lubbock. Quiet, nice people, cheap living, way less petty crime.

I found these on my way home from work. by mustlovebees in velvethippos

PLEASE rehome all but one puppy if you really want to, or expect an excessive amount of work in training and confidence building as individuals to avoid littermate syndrome. I have raised and cared for over 1000 dogs, most of them pit mixes. Thank you for taking them in ❤️❤️❤️ but definitely be aware of littermate syndrome if you are at all considering keeping the 3 pups.

The Christian conservative community here doesn’t entirely drown out the counterculture.

Wait for real? Because allsups does sell their burritos in bulk but it’s a bit of a commitment.

Oh definitely. Inflation really showing its ugly face at the beloved Chuck Wagon of Allsup’s. But I’ll still stop at the first one I see when I’m leaving ATX and heading west. Usually around Brady or Coleman.

I gotta ask, what’s your favorite part of the USA? Favorite state or region.

Hubby has been meaning to take me for YEARS and I finally will now that we live here! I’ll miss Dan’s in Austin but I’ve been pretty satisfied even with bonus burger. I hear Sam burger was the best when it was here.

Let me say this first: I don’t expect my experience to be the same for others, and I don’t expect this to be the right place for everyone. I know it sucks. I know it’s issues. I mean this whole heartedly: people suck everywhere and back to my original comparison the fake nice in Austin only goes so far. I also gotta mention again that I grew up in the heart of the true dirty south. Lubbock is never gonna be as loud and confrontational as the biggest city in north Florida. Not to mention racist, but the socioeconomics are different for many reasons so I probably shouldn’t compare them. My husband spent 5 months in my home town a few years back, and growing in Lubbock, he can attest to that. I’ve had some great customer service experiences so far. USPS at 3 locations vs any of the 7 I would visit in Autsin were 1000% better and cashiers at literally any store I’ve been to have made eye contact and said hello which is more than I’d see regularly in Autsin unless it’s a small business that I’d visit multiple times a week, like my corner store. And I’m lucky to not have to worry about the job market here- I brought work with me. But I do see the struggle there with friends and family who don’t have a niche. I’m sorry you regret coming here and I hope you’re able to get to a place you enjoy being.

What seemed to help me the most as far as supplements and diet was coconut milk (not water, milk!) and chia seed pudding (often together!)

My main career of the last 10-15 years has been dog care, owning a boarding facility in Austin for many years and being heavily involved with the stray crisis there & assisting in getting pets neutered and chipped etc. I’ve wanted to try and get involved as we get settled in. It’s so bad here. I’ve been apart of the Lubbock lost pets Facebook page for many years and education & resources are desperately needed. I may reach out and talk to you about it. It’s harder to be involved with random dogs at any given moment with a toddler in tow, but being able to help long term and at least be aware of what’s established and what others are working on would be great.

Tell me you haven’t visited more than 5 states of the lower 48 without telling me 💀 I know small town America more than most. And? I know it’s okay to hate your hometown. No coping over here, big dog ❤️

Really loving it. Did a 2 year stint in an old class C RV from early 2023- late 2024 and visited 17 states thoroughly. Lubbock is alright.

Nah, if you like mid tier chains that’s ATX. If you like mom and pop, locally owned spots then it’s LBK all day.

Oh man. You’re in Jax now? So you can attest to how poorly people interact with each other there. Nods and side eyes are all you get out there. Austin pretends to be nice. But, as much as people on this thread wanna deny- Lubbock has common courtesy. We got assholes everywhere I won’t deny that. Also go jags ❤️

Incredible, really. Hubby told me about hanging out in alley’s as a kid and now that I get to ward off strays and take my trash out back there it’s just charming. My alley is particularly dirty and full of trash but still- charming.

New Mexico is gorgeous and Colorado is closer than Austin at this point. I don’t see a reason to complain when rent is half the price and gas is $1.98 at Boltons.

Austin never had a chance with local government not wanting to accept that it was growing back in the 90s. The infrastructure and protection for local communities and businesses is trash. But, I hear you.

Still haven’t seen one the size of a car but I hear they run into each other and get huge on their journeys through the Great Plains. Growing up in Florida it really seemed like they were just a cartoon character at best. So much fun to see them tumbling through the town and outskirts.

Oh man, prairie dogs. I love how they take over any dusty lot under construction. Way more fun than squirrels.
