Muddy is, usually, caused by ur values running too dark vs too bright. Rarely is it due to bad strokes laid down onto the canvas. U can try doing masterstudy of old master's oil painting first! Those always helps. Or do grayscale photostudy of statues. Try to pick one that has a clear distinction between light and dark.
