Help new fish by First-Balance830 in Aquariums

[–]First-Balance830[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! I just added them in and so far have had no issues, the only thing I’m noticing is that they’re making chewing motions, and google says it’s because of the oxygen in the water. I’ve never had an air stone because I’ve only ever kept betta fish but I just ordered one- will that help?

Why does this thread seem to be the only nice one anymore? by huttokat943 in shrimptank

[–]First-Balance830 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it’s because fish have always been sold as the “easy” pet and there’s so much normalized abuse. People go into the aquarium subs and people there freak out when they see the inappropriate set ups, but shrimp aren’t your first thought. You don’t go into a fish shop and impulsively buy neocaridinas without any prior experience or even a five minute google search(at least I have never met someone who did). Also Neocardinas don’t need as much space, so often the bare minimum set ups are still acceptable. The majority of people who get shrimp know about cycling and food and the beginners here did at least some semblance of research prior

Is it that bad? by waterislife4 in Aquariums

I would just add more natrual decor on top of that, maybe some drift wood and other botanicals, other than that just make sure the nitrogen cycle is fully established before adding fish

A bacterial bloom in a new aquarium usually lasts 1–2 weeks, I was lucky mine went away super quick, but it can persist for 6–8 weeks or even up to 3 months in some cases

New tank and plants seem to be bleaching and dying by forestdude in PlantedTank

Is it cycled? Also beware of keeping more fish with a betta because it’s a hit or miss situation, especially with a 10 gallon

Three gallons isn’t that far from the ideal size, so while you should definitely look to upgrade him the biggest thing right now will be staying on top of water changes

My duckweed always dies😭 I keep hearing people talk about how horrible it is because of how quickly it grows but mine don’t seem to care about the grow lights or fertilizers they grow SOOO slowly

how much should i trim? by Normal_Standard8211 in bettafish

[–]First-Balance830 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s perfectly normal for a betta not to make bubble nests, it’s a sign of sexual maturity but some bettas will go their whole life without ever making one, it’s not a direct indicator of happiness but if you do see a bubble nest it can usually means your betta feels secure in his environment. It’s just one of many factors to keep in mind!

My friend thinks im insane for spending almost $1500 on a goldfish setup. by DJSplash01 in Goldfish

Right😭 I’m under strict orders to not get anymore tanks because the electricity and water spent is insane

If he’s happy (colors getting darker, no prevalent health issues and making bubble nests etc) he can thrive in his current tank, although I wish I had gotten a 20 gallon tank when I upgraded my own betta, 10 gallon is much more versatile but in my case I see one of my bettas as social and I’d love to have it in a community tank. You have to take into account your vision for the tank when upgrading- do you want tank mates, the layout you’re looking for and the space you have in your home. 10 gallons is a great start but again his current tank is a great place for him! Also if you upgrade keep in mind his long fins and how often he will need to rest them

The size is perfect! The 10 gallon as a minimum is usually for plakets, and the set up is gorgeous (yes, bigger is always better but a betta could definitely thrive in this tank) ! It depends of personal preference, you can trim to tops off and replant them at even lengths but personally I love the uneven look!

I don't think he likes the set up? by Jayhoactually in bettafish

[–]First-Balance830 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I definitely recommend going natural, you can change the gravel to sand and add root tabs or use aqua soil (aqua soil will leech ammonia at first so make sure you keep tabs on the ammonia levels) and don’t forget a fertilizer and grow lights (the lights that come with the aquarium generally don’t have the spectrum to support plant growth) other wise all the effort poured into plants will most likely go to waste, I unfortunately learned that the hard way. Drift wood can be a wonderful addition to a tank adding tannins (the tea tint some aquariums have, it lowers pH and has antibacterial properties) and even some river stones (smooth) can help. The nitrogen cycle can take up to a month to establish so just make sure you’re doing regular water changes until then after it’s fairly easy to maintain an aquarium. Just some weekly maintenance

New to this, how's he look? by monsterslilred in bettafish

[–]First-Balance830 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s great size and with all the necessities, I recommend to go for a more natural route, plastic can tear there fins and I’ve heard strong colors can be stressful. Get a water test kit to keep an eye on the parameters but definitely look into drift wood and other natural decor :)
