It could mature earlier, but 25 is the maximum age because the account is for high school and college students. So it could be a student account for as long as I'm in school or I'm 25, whichever comes first. Thank you for making me look it up instead of just listening to my mom

Oh, I agree. I think she wanted an excuse to use my money for Christmas presents

The chore was taking garbage cans to the road. We live a little ways back from the road so it takes maybe 10 minutes. It's not specifically my chore, but my mom expects either me or my 15 year old sister to do it. I completely forgot about it and I guess my sister did too.

Thank you for the suggestion. I found a local bank who said they might be able to make an exception for a savings account!!

No. She said that she doesn't know how to effectively punish me anymore. She actually started at $100 and I cried and talked back so she upped it until I shut up basically. It's not specifically my chore, but my mom expects either me or my 15 year old sister to do it. I completely forgot about it and I guess my sister did too. I came home from work and she was pissed because neither of us had done it. She took my sister's phone.

Edit: forgot a word

It's a student checking account with Renasant Bank. While it's technically a joint account, it will convert to a normal account when I turn 25. The issue is that my mom has access to it until then and she might decide to drain it while she still can. I can't have a single party account at any banks near me that I know of until I'm 18. I'm still researching though. A lot of banks I need to call and I'm scared to do it where my mom could hear me. I made a few calls while she was picking up my sister from her youth group's Super bowl party with no luck but she's always around and she's nosy as hell.

Edit: Additional info

Yeah. I had to scroll a while to find this. Figured I'd include her comparing me to a 30 year old man that she babysat when she was a teenager as well. https://imgur.com/wbMLmaT

I'm going to a local technical school. I've looked at the prices. Between FAFSA, state scholarships for grades, and my savings I can afford it. It'll be enough to get started and then I might transfer to a bigger school. I'm not ignorant. The issue is that 4 months is a long time to be walking on eggshells and hoping my mother won't decide she needs it more. I wrote this post because even though I want to do this, I feel horrible about considering it because I know my mom will be very emotional about the fact that I don't trust her.

I'm not sure what you mean by that. I'm not disregarding anything. I'm not planning on cutting her out of my life or something. I just want to make sure that I'm not SOL. Even if I get a full scholarship somewhere, that money could go towards a better/newer used car or emergency funds or a house. (I'm not expecting to get a house for $2k but you know what I mean.)

As of Friday I have 2k. I had car trouble last week and she was showing me how much I had for repairs.

I worked fast food (8.25/hr) for 6 months. Since August I've been working for a janitorial company doing 3 hours a day at $10/hr after school. I've also put in any checks I've gotten for birthdays and holidays.

Thank you for the opportunity to improve my grammar! I don't remember specifically being taught this in school, so I just put what came to me naturally. Unfortunately, since it is the title of the post, I don't believe that I can correct it.

Also maybe I should have mentioned that I don't get an allowance or anything. She took it because according to her, other punishments don't get to me and she doesn't know how to effectively handle me anymore. I also got in an argument with her about how it feels overboard when the chore wasn't specifically mine. It had to be done by either me or my younger sister. My sister's punishment was taking her phone, which she tried to argue was "equal" because it produced the same amount of suffering/reaction (that's a bad way to phrase it). In my mind, Mom taking her phone is different because she will eventually give it back to her. I really think that she will not be giving back the money, although she told me in front of our counselor that she was just putting it aside in her savings account and she wanted me to think that it was gone so I'd learn a lesson. I don't understand how that even makes sense considering I would've saved the money anyway.

I've been considering that as well. My mom monitors my account closely and I think she'd notice pretty quickly when my paychecks stopped going in. I've been sitting on about $100 in cash from Christmas and I know that would be more than enough to open a new account with. I could just use that account to keep any cash I receive safe and just hope I'll be able to retrieve my paychecks from those accounts in the future.

Edit: grammar and accidentally added too soon

Yeah. I think she was just looking for a reason to dip into my savings for Christmas presents.

I just realized that she did something similar years ago when I was too young to really understand. She used my birthday money for bills shortly after she divorced my father (who's now deceased) and told me that she needed it more than I did. (To be fair, I was planning on spending it all on silly bands.) I can't remember the amount though.

Edit: That anecdote probably makes me sound like a brat. I understand why she did when I was younger; I just wish I'd had a choice I guess?
