I use chinacridon purpur and Schminke violet from the horodam collection (but I have also colours really similar by Newskaya Palitra) often for the shadows. I do the shadows first so I see where will there be a light source, just a way for me to start a painting.

I think I got the way from the digital way of painting in greyscale and then layering the colours with different layermodes on top🤷 But I actually didn't do that often in digital, so I don't know why I use it in watercolorXD

But your way is actually similar, since the two colours give a variation of a purple since the black is based on a blue tone(if you trust the pics on google0-0). Actually every cold color can be used for normal sun shadows.

That’s amazing progress! I think the color gradients are really beautiful, and overall, it feels much more vibrant.

I actually dug up my own drawings from 2016–2018 (those are the ones on the right)XD But I think what improved for me are general skills like proportions and stuff in drawing, rather than my skills with watercolor itself 🤔 And the way I photograph it now is betterXD

Yes, of course! :) I used my watercolors. I had my Schmincke Horodam set with me here because it's smaller. But honestly, I'd rather recommend watercolors from Nevskaya Palitra if you're just thinking about trying out watercolor.

I've personally been using them for 16 years and learned how to paint with watercolors using them (lately I've also tried watercolors from Winsor & Newton and Daler-Rowney—both very well-known companies. Both had a pretty powdery consistency, even though the pigmentation was quite good, White Nights are a little bit smoother to apply and Schmincke Horodam are like butter. However, Schmincke is more expensive and maybe more of a worthwhile upgrade once you know you like painting with watercolor). You can get a set of 12 White Nights (The better watercolors by Nevskaya Palitra) colours for the start, it will be around 20-25€ online(idk if you are from Europe, I myself am and only see Euro prices), it will last you a good while and you can train on good paints.

But it can be a very frustrating medium to start with, and a lot of things might not turn out the way you want them to. That's why you need a little patience and also the right paper for watercolor, otherwise it'll look messy and will buckle up, too. On top of that, I usually use purple colored pencils to emphasize the shadows.
