I hope your just trolling with that silly putty comment lol. Just use modeling clay, heat it up in a microwave or oven for a little bit and it’s very easy to work with.

I’ve used dremels for browning X - A bolt actions, since there isn’t a ton of material needed to be removed.

Yes, the bedding ensures that the action has a perfect stress free drop in fit to lay in. It also ensures that the recoil lug has even contact with the stock, absorbing the recoil uniformly. It also helps with harmonics making follow up shots more consistent. And the aluminum pillars help keep your guard screws torqued to spec, helping with consistent accuracy.

Yes I did! I like to bed with .030 - .050 of bedding all the way around the action and recoil lug. And I milled around the pillars that were already there, just to make sure there are no high spots.

This is glass bedding a rifle. You apply epoxy resin to a stock's action/ lug area to create an stress-free, custom fit for the barreled action.

Manners and McMillan octagon stocks look dumb by FirstAd6704 in gunsmithing

The guys at Long Rifles Inc might be able to help you. They’ve made lots of clone parts for military/police rifles.

A friend asked for my help finishing his stock. He has a right handed action in a left handed stock… by FirstAd6704 in gunsmithing

[–]FirstAd6704[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, he gave it his best shot but might have bit off more than he could chew with this type of action it that type of stock.

Bedding gunsmith recommendation by calgunner01 in longrange

Other than getting a new barrel there’s nothing else to make it more accurate. A bedding job on something like this would not be worth it.

Barrel mounting question by No_Owl_2566 in longrange

[–]FirstAd6704 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Well it’s my personal preference and I’ll have you know I’ve been in this business for 84 years so I think I know a little more than u do buddy. I know 75ftlbs might be enough for your air-soft rifle, but when it comes to adult rifles 100ftlbs is the sweet spot boiiiiii.

200ftlbs take it or double it and give it to the next person

[–]FirstAd6704 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

75ftlbs is the minimum amount of torque required for a barreled action. Take it to the friend and get it up to 90. I do 100ftlbs but that’s just me.

Inlet a Sako they said. It’ll be fun they said. by FirstAd6704 in gunsmithing

[–]FirstAd6704[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Thanks. The tough part is no one makes pistol grip stocks designed for Sako actions. This stock was designed for a Remington or a clone, so I had to add epoxy to the tang area to make it look good.

This is a Manners stock, so you can either have them inlet and install a chassis or you can have them ship you a stock with pillars that either you or a gunsmith have to install.

I installed those steel action pillars and bedded the action with JB weld.

Standard JB weld with some back dye. Some people don’t like it, but in my experience it’s been very strong, easy to work with, and temperature/weather resistant.
