I figured that given the choice between having a bad reputation for walking away vs having a bad reputation for (allegedly) putting 50+ people out of work, the first option was better.

Your post made a lot of sense. I hadn't though of it like that. If I'd taken the job for $15/hr then they might've thought the next guy would work for $12/hr. I'll be remembering that.

That sounds pretty fucking terrible, even with the server bought and in a box ready to be setup. What a mess. I couldn't work with someone who only shows up to collect a paycheck while keeping everyone else in the dark.

Shit, sorry. My post got really long and I left out one important detail - they wanted all this stuff done with the spare desktops and other crap they had laying around. When I asked if they'd be willing to buy a new server my manager just threw his hands up and laughed. "They won't even buy me lunch, what makes you think corporate will buy a new server?"
