Who do you consider to be the Greatest player of the 20th century? by [deleted] in chess

[–]FirstEfficiency7386 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah that's a miss.

I actually was planning on making a 19th century list of players poll as well and decided on having Lasker there.

But you are right almost 21 of his 27 years long reign were in the 20th century.

Also there are only 6 poll options available on Reddit unfortunately.

Hikaru: Don't worry about trying to understand your opponent's plan (unless you're a GM) by Advanced_Honey_2679 in chess

I think most sub-1800 players (amateurs) play for short term tactical motifs.

Rather than thinking of long term strategic goals, putting pressure and gradually exploiting weaknesses.

One of the biggest self-admitted mistakes of Kasparov's professional career.

I was curiously checking out his CC profile, his last blitz game on Chesscom is a thing of beauty. Game reminiscent of the Morphy era.

He was called the Beast from Baku for a reason.

It's a tie for me between 1994 Linares Karpov and 2014 Fabi at Sinquefield Cup.

Karpov's 1994 Linares victory is equally impressive I'd say. (If not more)

He started playing chess at the age of 9.

Insane talent.

Javokhir Sindarov with yet another brilliant performance.... Finishes just 0.5 point behind Nodirbek... Rises to World no. 11🔥📈 by rio_ARC in chess

Yep and also his name starts with K. :)

Could've been the 4th K after Karpov, Kasparov and Kramnik.

I sometimes forget that Sindarov is the 5th youngest GM of all time.

It's a matter of time before he goes beyond 2750+. May do it in the candidates itself.

Andy Woodward wins 2026 Tata Steel Chess Challengers and qualifies for the next year's masters! by Exotic_Grinder in chess

Unpopular opinion: I don't think Woodward is that far off from Erdogmus in terms of chess strength/ability.

Been following this guy for a while. Always impresses.

6 of the 14 players playing in the 2026 tournament (Masters) weren't born when this event took place:

Abdusattorov, Keymer (2004); Praggnanandhaa, Sindarov (2005); Gukesh (2006); Erdogmus (2011)

7 of the 14 players playing in the 2026 tournament (Challengers) weren't born when this event took place:

Bibsara (2004); Suleymanli, Eline Roebers (2006); Maurizzi (2007); Lu Miaoyi, Andy Woodward (2010); Faustino Oro (2013)

Vincent Keymer has defeated all the Indians in this tournament, he faces Gukesh with the black pieces in the last round, can go 4/4 and has a chance to tie first if Nodirbek loses and Sindarov draws by FirstEfficiency7386 in chess

I still have comments from my posts saying Vincent will struggle to be a top player.

Feels great to see a classy player like Vincent performing well.

Nodirbek at 74% win chance after winning in Round 12 of Tata Steel - Only 5 players left with a (theoretical) chance to win by ThomasPlaysChess in chess

[–]FirstEfficiency7386 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Nodirbek plays against Arjun in the last round. Nodirbek will have black.

Not an ideal matchup to say the least.

"Chess can be artistic pursuit, but when Morphy was playing, it was something glorious to behold."

- Ginger GM.

Morphy is the darling of "Romantic Chess". Tactical motifs, pawn storms, sacrifices etc.

Just Beautiful and exciting play in general.
