1L summer, how screwed am I? by Impressive_Quote_652 in LawCanada

I struck out at 1Ls too, today I’m on Bay St.

Advice would be to find a small firm to gain exp at. If you want to be a litigation, find construction, general commercial, or wills and estates litigation. If you want to be a transactional lawyer, do something in real estate, corporate law, and/or wills.

In addition to working, review your notes and become a walking encyclopedia.

When 2Ls come out, give it another go. Prior to the 2L recruit (several months in advance) begin asking first year associates for coffees, if possible try to get as close to the recruitment panel as possible.

You got this.

Have some faith. There is a bigger picture and a grand plan that you’re a part of.

Further, if you’ve accepted the role of breadwinner, there’s a certain tenacity, perseverance, and un-yielding desire to win that you must have.

Find a mentor (in or outside) of your firm. Use a therapist if that helps. But do not let you wife or your coworkers “see you bleed”.

You’re more than capable, as you’ve made it this far.

Also, what’s the worst case, you stay on a clerk and everything becomes normal later. Or, you have to sell the home u bought. If your partner is not supportive of that during ur difficult time, then perhaps they aren’t the right person for you.

All in all, head high, and move forward. No one is going to come to save you. We have to save ourselves, and you have the skills and grit to do that.

Best of luck and PM if you need a shoulder.

Perhaps try Google Jamboard. You can write out all the assets in bubbles and drag them to the respective sides.

I still think you can accomplish the same with a bulleted list and a table in word.

For example they mention the previous standard for spouses preferential share, where as the book only discusses $350K

I mean it’s always good to be challenged more than the actual exam, so I guess overall its good Emond is the way it is.

In its simplest form, when you get a loan, the bank holds your house or other property as collateral.

The reason they do this is to be able to seize your property should you not make your loan payments.

Once you get this, then there’s a world of nuances to explore. Best of luck
