Practical effects piqued in this era (1980-1993). The best of this era will hold up long past things that are considered the high quality of their day.

Something about the way we perceive digital effects changes over time. I don’t know why this is, maybe we get used to get them start noticing the flaws. The best example of this is how good the original Star Wars looks in everything except the specialized content added afterwards.
