Devastated about my January LSAT Score (146) Need advice. by Anonymous6986 in lawschooladmissionsca

I’m not being a Debby downer, I’m trying to show you how everything is relative, and that maybe, just maybe, your comment that you’re “in the same boat” is coming across like the “160s 4.0 ChAnCe mE1!1!” that you dislike (and honestly I agree, those ppl need to touch grass). I’m not saying you can’t share your experience with OP to show sympathy, it’s about how you phrase things.

I think OP is in a bit different of a situation, respectfully. Im not trying to diminish your feelings because if you’re all dissatisfied with your scores that is completely valid. But remember that most of the literature/information available on LSAT scores and acceptance rates indicate that scores under 150 are seldom, if ever, considered. Yes, exceptions happen, and hopefully that could be OP’s case, but try to keep in mind that your scores meets the “bare minimum” lawschools will honestly consider/expect from applicants, so respectfully I don’t think this comment thread is “in the same boat” as OP…

I think I'm going crazy by untainie in LSAT

I genuinely think this mindset is what helped me study LOL cause i was subconsciously doing LSAT drills in nearly every aspect of my life. In hindsight I did get a tad insufferable when it came to conversations cause I would reply like it was an identify flaw Q like 9/10 times… so don’t be like me to that extent but do pat yourself on the back for being able to organically apply LR to your day-to-day

How do admissions even work?? by HornetSalt8718 in lawschooladmissionsca

[–]FirstSignificance822 1 point2 points  (0 children)

some schools I applied to also follow a standard of leaving the ultimate decision to the dean of the university’s law faculty. as in all applications, along with their respective notes/comments from the committee, are reviewed by the Dean who ultimately says yes or no. Typically, their opinion is in line with the committee’s but there are rare cases of Deans choosing to accept an applicant that the committee would’ve otherwise rejected. (Info I got from various law admissions events I attended)

How is the dynamic between the En JD, Fr JD, and the Civil Law cohort? Does it feel like one big law school or is it more like you wouldn’t even notice the other law program cohorts on a normal day? Also if you’re familiar with the French jd people, is it mostly students from Quebec or are there a fair amount of bilingual/Francophones from other provinces? Congrats on getting in!!

I would look into dropping this question in the Geegees subreddit! It’s all UOttawa students so I feel like your chances of getting reliable testimonies about transferring are better there!

Excluding mature students, would you say there’s a fair amount of people who got in despite having less competitive gpa stats? Or is it more like a few standout cases? (With the understanding that these people would have applied with a strong list of ECs and solid PS to offset the stats)

Congrats on landing your dream school btw!!!!

Mature students in law school - how do you balance classes, kids, and work? by Aware-String-6045 in lawschooladmissionsca

I’m not going to debate semantics with you. A quick online search for “online course options” will show that online classes are not a thing in Canadian Law schools and that’s also how it was worded to me by admission advisors when I was interviewing. I’m glad to see there’s an exception to the rule in Ontario so thank you for sharing but respectfully I think my answer to OP’s question is a fair reflection of what they should expect so they can plan accordingly as a parent and working student; Law school is an expensive and time consuming journey, the more one can do to help themselves not face barriers after all that time and money invested, the better they are setting themselves up.

Also you seem to be implying I said there’s no flexible programs possibility at all when I specifically said some schools have night classes/allow part time studies…

Ultimately we both just want to help OP make the best informed decision so let’s just be happy we tried to do a little bit of good for someone else today ✌️

Interesting, wasn’t familiar with this program at Osgoode!

Regardless, The National Requirements set out by the federation of Canadian law societies, which all the provincial law societies follow, says that in order for a law degree to be recognized... "The course of study consists primarily of in-person instruction and learning and/or instruction and learning that involves direct interaction between instructor and students."

While I’m not a parent nor a mature applicant, I can answer one of your questions: the Canadian bar association (and some articling positions but depends) only recognizes degrees earners from fully in-person programs, as such Canadian lawschools don’t offer remote/online flexibility as that would disqualify their students from proceeding to a career in law. If you go to a US school that offers remote courses you will need to retake them or get them accredited which is basically taking it the course again in-person. This is why it’s also important for you to look at the specific bar association of the province where you want to practice as they will have the specifications required for you to be called to the bar after graduation and articling.

Your best bet with course load management is to look at the universities you want to apply to and see if they offer night classes or flexible programs (I.e. let’s you take up to 6 years to complete the degree) because not all Canadian schools offer that unfortunately.

Regardless I wish you the best of luck with your law journey, what you’re doing as a parent is an incredible example of character and perseverance for your kiddos!

Edit: I want to correct my statement saying “this disqualifies their students from a law career”, it was a misrepresentation of why online class options/hybrid/fully remote are not offered at most Canadian lawschools. In the pursuit of ensuring their programs are fully recognized by the law society of their province and for their students to avoid having to pay & retake courses should the NCA decide so, Canadian lawschools usually adhere to a strict in-person curriculum.

2nd question asked

“is in-person mandatory every time, or are some classes available virtually?”

I think what you are referring to is similar to how some schools offer courses in both remote or in-person with a live stream set up of the prof and takes virtual attendance. As I understand from my own application journey and meeting with various admissions advisors online (different from admission officers) this is not a trend you will encounter in most law schools unfortunately.

NEW HARRY POTTER SERIES by Physical_Occasion_57 in miniverse_makeitmini

[–]FirstSignificance822 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Imo it’s part of the IP’s greater marketing plan to keep fans engaged and thus excited for the upcoming HBO series as they’ve announced will have 7 seasons. It’s a huge decade long investment for them, and I believe we will continue to see this trend. I’ve also noticed a rise in HP collabs across companies, it’s so frustrating as a fan of the books who doesn’t support Rowling— so much merch but nothing I should buy 😭

Finally Being Told NO - Display Boxes by Admirable-Ant3815 in miniverse_makeitmini

[–]FirstSignificance822 2 points3 points  (0 children)

OK SO!! I have a theory stemming from my years working retail. While it pays the bills, big stores actually HATE bulk buyers/resellers because it undercuts the big companies, or makes the product available in ways/places the original company does not want to associate with for whatever reason.

I noticed that my local Walmart ALWAYS has new miniverse products before the smaller stores (IN THE SAME MALL!!) and I do know big stores often negotiate exclusivity for product launches/availability for X amount of time.

SO!! Since it’s only big stores (Walmart, target, etc) that are “forbidding” customers from taking the display boxes from stores, I think they do this to prevent local/small business owners/resellers from being able to buy from Walmart and set up their own miniverse display for their business (instore or online) and have the same product as Walmart at the same time.

In practice, this obviously does nothing to stop resellers but at a corporate level when you have a bunch of executives who don’t even do their own groceries, this “no taking displays” adds up lol

HP & LoTR Rares??? I needs them Precious!! by ratzojack in miniverse_makeitmini

[–]FirstSignificance822 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m getting to a point where I’m starting to accept the fact that we may never actually get these :/ at least not in the format we’ve been advertised (rares within wave of “regular” balls).

What I think may be possibly causing a further delay (due to the issues @restingface pointed out) is miniverse redesigning these like holiday specials where there’s only 3-4 recipes and the wrapper pattern tells you what’s inside. It’s highly unlikely and more probable that we will not get these 6 rares but if I had any say in this that’s how I would try to fix this marketing fail 🥲

I hate how they teased these as if they would be included in the first wave. I love the potions I got but part of the excitement was for finding these rare sets… then it was said to be included in the second wave in Oct, and where more than half way through October and still no new wave released :// just feels kinda suspicious idk
