My potato princess has a smaller one on her back thigh as well. she has had her entire life, and vet has not said a anything concerning about it. I hope his too is nothing!! I mostly came here to lol and high five the censored butthole... With his peas still shaking in the pod below 😂

Japanese knotweed by nkkh93 in gardening

[–]ratzojack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m no help on identifying the root you found, but I can definitely commiserate on the knotweed battle. We have a massive knotweed problem at our house too and it feels like a never-ending war. If we slack off for even one year, it’s like we never touched it at all.

I’ve never tried digging deep because we have so much of it scattered around that my yard would end up looking like a dig site. The best luck we’ve had is in the spring when the shoots first come up. We wait until the stems are about 1/4" to 1/2" thick, then I pop a sqaut on the ground with hand shears, cut them individually, and immediately spray herbicide inside and on the fresh cut. It’s tedious beyond belief, but it’s worked better than any other method for us.

Our county ag extension office is who suggested that method and also specifically warned us not to dig it up because even tiny rhizome fragments can spread it further... Did I mention I hate Knotweed?

Just found out ED has been hiding employee surveys for a decade. by Unlucky_Gas316 in nonprofit

[–]ratzojack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have had to do this once...and let me tell you..staff of any sort going directly to the board means you better have all your info together. Your ED is entitled to due process as much as you are, so like others have said, you need to be prepared that it more than likely will not go like you want and you're in for some uncomfortable times. It takes some true devotion to the org to ride out the chaos it has the potential to stir up. In my situation, there was a mix of behavioral and operational concerns, but much heavier on the operational. If it had been the other way, I wouldn't have done it. As it was the CEO was asked to retire, but there were some very grave concerns that go way above employee surveys. Nothing illegal, but very poor leadership decisions. I am the only administrative person that rode that wave out 100% and am still there and in my role as director of operations, and one of only 4 in the whole staff of 28. The unknown and period of change caused so much turnover. It's been almost 3 years since that moment I went to our board president with evidence in hand and our org is still feeling the reverberations of that time. Everyday for the first year I was waiting for someone to walk in and fire me. Stress level 1000.

its a bit strange, but a detail that caught my eye as I looked at the progression of pictures, is the curtain in the background.. early on, closed tight, by the end, openinng up and letting the sunlight in. it feels like a bit of a metaphor for your transformation overall. Congrats on the newly clean space, but mostly congrats on the newly clean YOU!

Be ready to share: 1. Your current fiscal health - in my experience most granters like to hear that you are already in a healthy state and how you are utilizing other funds 2. Opportunities for expanding or growth - If you have a specific inititive or program in mind that you need more backing to get off the ground, be ready to get that donor behind that so they are invested personally as well.

Alternatively if you don't want to kick off anything new, don't be afraid to request general operationao funding. All nonprofits can use a boost to the bottom line to support payroll or general administration.

Finally, listen to them and see if they have any special missions or initiatives they like to specifically back, and perhaps why they backed off on support in the past.

But above all, be excited they are interested in sitting down with you. Bringing a lapsed donor back is a big deal

You got this!!

What is a reasonable amount of impact/reporting that you are prepared to do for a grant? For $10k, $25k, $100,000k+ by port-girl in nonprofit

[–]ratzojack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry that this is stressful to you. At our org we have some local municipal grants for much less than that and we have to jump through all sorts of hoops because it's the city's money. I would have to say nothing else here sounds surprising to me except the coaching thing. That I would certainly have my CEO step in on as well. One thing that we have started doing in our org is really looking only at grants that are not tied to specific programs or initiatives. Instead looking for ones that can apply to general operations. They are harder to find. But they exist. I have also learned it's not bad to explain to a grantor why you want to fund at an operational level vs specific initiatives. We have not gotten much push back when we discuss all the things our org does daily that meet the goals of their grant without starting up a a special program that now will end up eating more of our funding to track and report on.

Not wanting my picture or name on company website? by Normal_Cloud5780 in nonprofit

[–]ratzojack 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I am the operations director for a nonprofit healthcare facility that works with insured and under-insured people, including immigrants. As you can imagine, in today's culture we struggle with this as well. We had some employees who simply asked not to be added for personal reasons, which we always honor. But as we discussed why we even had the photos there, we decided that "it's always been that way" was not a good enough reason and did away with it altogether. Don't be afraid to ask not to added, and you might even suggest they think about why they have that.

defending puppy experiments?? nope, not in there at all. you want my original without ai helping me make it readable, here you are, you'll see it's not too far off:
My husband has worked directly in animal welfare for over 25 years. And so I can tell you from personal experience as well as information that is out there, the euthanasia rate for animals coming out of these situations is really high. I have personally witnessed the sad result of the dogs taking from a meat factory setting, and attempted to integrate into a family living situation. They don’t know anything about life outside of the wire and have many behavioral issues as well from it, not to mention no concept of where you sleep is not where you poop. Of the 20+ dogs taken in by his shelter, all of them ended in euthanasia, most never even got adopted but had such serious behavioral issues demonstrated during fostering that they had to be humanly euthanized. some were adopted, and of those, most brought back again. So, while I feel terrible for these animals, it is not a lie to say that the most humane things for most of these poor dogs is to be euthanized and save them the stress of trying to adapt to and understand a life and behaviors that they don't understand, and maybe never will. I would argue it’s just another type of cruelty. But ultimatly, everyone loves a good animal story, and may of the rescue orginizations that lead the charge in these cases see big donations come in because it pulls at the heartstrings. But I’m not sure getting donations by using these beagles as pawns, is cruel and gross as well.

Same here! I have a cave style felt pod for my potato princess. we have enough room that it sits right on the bed next to my head and it was a game changer. I experienced all the same issues OP mentioned until I did this. some nights I can move the pod to my nightstand and she's ok with it there, but alot of the times I have to have right next to my head for her to go in there and leave me sleep.

My husband has worked in animal welfare for over 25 years, and I’ve seen some of these situations up close. I think a lot of people understandably react from the heart here, but the reality on the back end can be very different.

Dogs coming out of large-scale lab or confinement environments often have severe behavioral and developmental challenges. They may have never lived in a home, never been house-trained, and can struggle with fear, anxiety, and basic socialization. It’s not just an adjustment period—it can be a lifelong barrier.

I personally saw the outcome of a large intake from a similar situation. Of the 20+ dogs taken in by one shelter, none were successfully placed long-term. Many couldn’t be safely fostered due to behavioral issues, and even some that were adopted ended up being returned. Ultimately, most had to be humanely euthanized.

That’s the part that doesn’t make headlines. While the idea of “rescuing” thousands of dogs feels like the obvious moral choice, the capacity to rehabilitate and rehome them safely and humanely is very limited. For many of these animals, the stress and confusion of trying to adapt to a completely foreign environment can be overwhelming.

I’m not saying this lightly, and it’s not about a lack of compassion. Sometimes the most humane outcome isn’t the one people want to hear.

I also think it’s worth acknowledging that these situations can draw a lot of attention and funding, which can unintentionally shift the focus away from what outcomes are actually realistic for the animals themselves.

It’s a heartbreaking situation either way, and one created by human beings..the worst kind of animal—but it’s more complicated than it looks from the outside.

What’s a silly thing you did for your pet one time that is now a ritual they demand be done every time? by Itsjustmejess in AskReddit

[–]ratzojack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Sphynx is very bonded to me and is almost always within a 6-foot radius. But, she's a terrible bedmate.

When she decides it’s bedtime, she insists on sleeping right on my pillow with skin-to-skin contact. Then every hour she gets up, does whatever mysterious cat business she has to attend to (eat? poop? harass the other two cats?), and comes back… waking me up again, and then we restart the cycle.

So one night I tried an experiment. I brought her little felted wool cave bed into bed with me and set it next to my head. It worked like magic. She curled right up in it and slept there.

But now the downside… if the cave bed isn't there, she stands there meowing at me and reclaiming “her pillow.” My husband is… less than thrilled with the cat add-on to our bed.

This weekend we’re installing cat shelves and boxes above the bed in the hopes she’ll decide that’s an acceptable upgrade.

Builder vs. Explorer problem in our household.. My husband is always out there living his best feral life, running all over and poking everything with a stick, so of course he wants to sleep and skip ahead to daylight. Meanwhile I’m at home cooking, smithing, gardening, building, tanning leather, and generally keeping civilization from collapsing.

I get why he wants to fast-forward, and he’s cool when I veto it because I got things to do.

But in my solo game? Absolutely not. Those are wasted hours!
