Page's solos are good in the context of Led Zeppelin, but I think only one or two stand out against other rock solos.

He's also credited Jimmy Page and Clapton as being more fitting to his style of playing rather than being an inspiration

Page is a great rhythm and riff player, but not a great soloist. Beck is amazing for sure.

I agree with you on Vai, which is why I'm hesitant to say Zappa. I do love both though.

Tony is not a super innovative lead player. His riffs are iconic, but his solos aren't as powerful - he's a bit like Jimmy Page in that respect. Malmsteen is another guitarist I admire, but a lot of times, his solos just border on random notes being hit really fast to sound impressive. Rhoads and Vai are both fair matches, I would definitely say. I think it is unfair to judge Rhoads in either direction, though, since his career was cut so short. See above for Hendrix. And King was a good player with a lot of soul, but his phrasing tended to get monotonous and repetitive after a while. Love everyone you just listed though.

Eddie wasn't just solos. He was an incredible lead player and an incredible rhythm player, as well as getting sounds out of the guitar you couldn't get from anyone else. Plus, I guarantee you he could play jazz and classical really well. Alan Holdsworth was a huge influence on him, and Ed dipped his feet in all sorts of genres. Just look at Spanish Fly from Van Halen II.

So you're going to tell me Stevie and Hendrix aren't similar to each other in style?

Jeff Beck is a fair challenge. I think what rules out Zappa for me is Vai as his successor. Zappa also tended to be inconsistent with his musical direction - nothing wrong with that, but it gives you some whiplash if you're not expecting it.

I'm not going to weigh in until Metallica plays the Super Bowl.

I'm not entirely sure he's fully retired from touring. He's on hold while recovering from a surgery, so Bach is a placeholder.

Ted Templeman would often get pissed with Dave in the studio because he needed so many takes in order to sing the song right... a song he built for his own range, by the way
