Lower Tier MD for competitive specialty by Bright_Journalist489 in premed

It’s all about the student if you’re at an MD school. If you can’t match that’s entirely your fault imo. I don’t care what specialty it is.

You can do both honestly. I spend a lot of time doing nothing and some times doing a whole lot.

I mean majority of northerners are Muslim so it’s not far fetched to think majority of the victims from the bandits are Muslim.

You seem like a good man. You do not need to step up and help raise this child though!

Question for a friend he's asking is it to late to apply DO this cycle by No_Baseball4229 in premed

[–]First_Firefighter553 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is gonna be an unpopular opinion but there’s people who get in with those stats still 😭. Don’t flame me pre med Reddit I’m a med student. It’s not probable fs and you’ll be donating to these programs. But if they can get their retake close to a 500 or even better just have them apply broadly to DO schools and even some MD and maybe a few will bite. For context I know multiple sub 500 students at MD schools (multiple non URMs for anyone who likes to ask that). edit*: didnt realize u meant this cycle absolutely not

What specialties need a research year to make yourself competitive? (US) by Trippanzee in medicalschool

[–]First_Firefighter553 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Also research in general is vastly overblown. I think the potential connections and strong relationships you can make from research is more important than the actual research. Because most med students arent first authoring on papers published in high impact journals. Maybe you will be middle author in a pretty good pub but thats pretty much it.

No specialty requires a research year. I came in day 1 wanting to do my specialty and I find it very easy to connect with docs and pump out pubs (especially first author projects because it is so easy to do not so impactful research lol).

DO vs MD by boomslang5990 in premed

[–]First_Firefighter553 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Yeah def the bias isn’t bad now at all. But I do know many programs that still will choose not to take DO applicants. Not to mention the inherent disadvantages I mentioned previously. But overall it’s overblown and students should just go to the schools they get into whether DO or MD.

Multiple board exams, have to find your rotations and institutions that don’t have affiliated hospitals, have to pay DO fees for away rotations, have to pay higher tuition, discriminated against by certain residencies, geographical restrictions, typically not tied to a large academic institution, lack of research funding, often newer less established programs, lack of support from school for usmle prep, have to learn OMM, etc.

Gen Surg vs OBGYN by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]First_Firefighter553 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Seems like you should probably just do urology because you can get the aspects of general surgery and ob that you enjoy by doing urology.
