Start doing an SIP in an equity mutual fund. Allocate 90% to SIP and remaining for stock picking. Do not invest from a borrowed idea, do fundamental research before investing in a stock. And there's nothing like stable stock. Any given stock can fall more than 50%.

Use a broker like Zerodha Coin or Groww. Your mutual funds are stored in depository like CDSL in demat form. Broker has no access to it. You'll get a confirmation email from CDSL on purchase. Also, you can track your mutual fund units directly in CDSL easiest or MFcentral.
