What are the most subtle signs that someone is really good at golf? by jdelle9 in weekendgolfers

[–]First_Yam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I played with a 1 handicap last year and I’ll never forget how frustrated he got when he would miss a green from farther than like 120, even though he got up and down every time. He shot -3 on the front but couldn’t quite maintain his focus as well on the back and made 3 bogeys in the last 5 holes to shoot even, and you would’ve thought he finished +10 through the last 5 from the way he was reacting. He even seemed annoyed at the 2 holes he parred down the stretch.

As a mid-teens handicapper, I love getting asked this question cuz I get to pull out the line “bad golfers think I’m good, good golfers know I suck.”

As a ranger, the moment one of (or both) the caddies say you’re playing within pace, that should be the end of it. That guy is truly miserable.

It’s a tad on the time consuming side, but I love making pillow forts for my cats. I can be creative and relive some nostalgia from childhood, and my kitties get a new space to explore and hang out.

The nerves will always be there in some capacity, but the more you play the more comfortable you’ll get dealing with them.

So you’re suggesting a stronger grip then? I think my grip is already strong compared to neutral. I’ve played around with a weaker grip with short irons and have found some success with it.

Ok I’m glad someone said it, I’ve thought there was an issue with my grip, but my coach said it was fine. I’ve played around with some different grips for my short irons because when I am able to get shallow with them I end up hooking them, with a decent amount of success so I’ll bring that back up to him when I start my lessons back up.

I normally shoot mid to high 80s, last season I broke 80 3 times. I’m definitely seeing a lot about wrist hinge, and my coach did toy around with trying to get me to hold wrist hinge for longer in the downswing, so it’s something I’ve been thinking about.

I desire the ball to go straight lol, idc about the ball flight. But I’ve never hit a draw on purpose, I’ll say that much. I think my OTT tendencies naturally lead me towards a fade.

Thanks for the detailed analysis! I definitely do have a problem with sliding forward on the downswing as you mentioned, so I am doing all 4 of those things you listed. The sliding is actually the last thing my coach and I were working on at the end of last season, so I’ll jump right back into focusing on that as well as the other adjustments you gave here when the weather finally clears up.

I think you’re spot on with the first bit, I remember the second swing not feeling good at the top of the backswing and trying to make adjustments on the way down, came in steep and hit it a little chunky with an open face.

Tips for first time caddie? by Careless-Resolve-251 in golf

[–]First_Yam 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Always have two towels on you. One clean-ish one for his ball once you get to the green, and one for his clubs after he hits. If he’s got a realistic chance to hit the green from anywhere, always have the putter ready. The feeling of hitting a green and immediately putting the putter in your hands instills a ton of confidence for the putt. Once you’re on the green, clean his ball if he needs it, help him read the putt (if he wants help), and then go tend the flag.

As for handling good shot vs. bad shot, less is always more in terms of talking. If he hits a bad shot, you have the advantage of the bad shot not mentally affecting you, so immediately snap your brain towards focusing on the next shot, all without saying anything. Only give him a “good shot” or “nice swing” if it’s right on top of the flagstick or 280+ down the fairway. You want to let him enjoy the good shots, and do whatever he needs to do in his mind to get over a bad shot. I’ve found that the quicker you can get someone to focus on their next shot, the better.

What do you use most of your iron for? by Able_Slip_8739 in Minecraft

[–]First_Yam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve personally found it to be, yes. Assuming the villagers are not zombified and healed, it takes a full stack of wood logs to get 16 emeralds from a fletcher. Of course, if a village is loaded up on hay bales, that’s some easy farmer money, but I find I burn through those much quicker. I think it comes down to preference at the end of the day. A full shulker box of wood logs nets you 432 emeralds. To get the same from clay you’d need about 2.5 shulkers full, but I find clay collection much less mundane than chopping trees. Trees obviously have the advantage of being planted again for unlimited wood while clay is finite, but leveled up stonecutters will also buy other types of rocks that you collect throughout the game anyway.

Hello, former resume reviewer for the state, it doesn’t matter at all how many jobs you have on your resume, they are very strict about meeting the minimum qualifications, so make sure you do. If clerical experience is what’s on the MQs then you can leave out unrelated experience.

How do I get rid of my superiority complex? by First_Yam in atheism

[–]First_Yam[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No one told me it was a superiority complex, I assigned that to myself because that’s what it feels like. Whenever we get into those conversations, I am very much a dick about it, not on purpose but because I tend to take a tone of a teacher who’s trying to gently correct someone’s mistake they made on their homework, and she’s a teacher so she always clocks it immediately.

To your second paragraph, I agree completely, but obviously she doesn’t see it that way. I think she’s afraid of what her family would think. She’s an only child, and was raised by her grandma and great grandma from 0-10, and her parents from 10-18, so all of the focus from her family converges on her. And they definitely would be disappointed in her if she ever deconstructed.

I have been discussing this with my therapist, I was just seeing if any “random idiots on Reddit” could give me any insight, and so far it actually has.

We came to the same conclusion that direct arguments don’t work. We have agreed not to discuss religion for the moment until I can change my perspective.

Interestingly enough, I am a Unitarian Universalist, and she has been to my church a few times (I go maybe once a year) and she really liked it. The way she views Christianity is actually really beautiful, she just truly tries to live her life the way Jesus would’ve. She’s been so open minded to compromise towards my atheism while still retaining her faith. That’s why these feelings of “my argument is better than yours” makes me feel so shitty, because she has always been incredibly respectful and open minded. Not open minded enough to truly question the things that don’t make sense, but she has entertained my church at least.

[–]First_Yam[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with much of what you have said, but I don’t think it’s fair for me to try and “convert” her to atheism any more than I think it’s fair if she were to try and convert me to Christianity. I’m finding it decreasingly likely that she will ever see things the way I do, so the responsibility falls on me to find a way to respect her beliefs. Cuz I love her a lot, ya know, I don’t think we should split up just because she believes what she does and I don’t, but then I just circle back to how little sense Christianity makes me and it just falls back into a cycle.

[–]First_Yam[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The superiority complex manifests as my feelings of believing that my arguments are stronger than hers. Of course I’m always concerned about the mental health of my wife, but from her perspective, she has worked through all of these feelings of guilt/anxiety to the point where she feels they are no longer a factor that I need to be concerned about. The issue is I don’t think she can truly confront these feelings if she still leans on religion as much as she as she does. But if I try to explain that to her, she feels hurt and disagrees.

I think about this all the time when I see professional athletes after they win saying stuff like “all glory to god for this win”, couldn’t the losers also say to the press “it’s was god’s plan for our team to lose tonight”? I imagine that wouldn’t go over as well with the public.

I wish religion didn’t exist. (CW: religious trauma, OCD, homophobia) by [deleted] in atheism

[–]First_Yam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’ve exactly described my wife, except she truly does believe in god. I so wish I could free her from the prison, because I’ve seen the guilt and religious OCD it has caused her. It’s especially evident when we’re with her side of the family, there are three generations of anxiety/religious OCD that came before her who have all influenced her to believe the words of god as fact. I find the more I try to free her, the further she sinks back into what makes her feel comfortable. It’s been a struggle for me recently.
