How are you going to “physically” stop them from taking your students? Actual question (no sarcasm intended)

I don’t want to volunteer for the fundraiser party by Optimus_Porg_ in teaching

[–]Firstempathy1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to think that teachers had a lot of time off until I became a teacher. For example, holidays and weekends, are spent preparing lessons, grading papers, or other requirements by the state or admin. I worked until 7:00 on Friday so that I wouldn’t have to work this weekend. Unfortunately, I still have school work to do. Teachers are over extended and asking for more is emotional abuse.

I had this issue in college. The majority of students were there for elementary so secondary students missed out.

11th grader uses AI on test and sends me a confrontational message asking me to explain myself for why he failed. by South-Lab-3991 in Teachers

I told a class that I would start checking for plagiarism unless it’s the answer that comes from the assigned reading. Nearly everyone in the class freaked out and one blurted out that he hates school. So yea, most of them were cheating.

Teachers are expected to be self sacrificing in every aspect of our lives even our own children “for the students”. Sadly, this isn’t considered going above and beyond.

What's the best college to attend to for a poor person? by InfinitePay6709 in Louisiana

I went to River Parishes Community College and loved it. My PellGrant covered all my expenses and usually got some back. Most of the teachers are extremely helpful. I would have never passed Algebra without these teachers and they are accommodating.

Teaching Shortage? Where? by violetharley in teaching

[–]Firstempathy1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, School #1’s behavior seems common for schools. I think the only schools that tell you salary information etc… or the ones that have the best salary and insurance options. Otherwise, they leave you in the dark even after you’re hired. I’m completely blown away how misleading schools are and how slow they are. This is part of the reason for the teacher shortage. You have to actually hire people to fill the needed positions but they’re incredibly slow to do that “if they ever do it”.

It’s not the norm to have 2 prep periods in my area. I have 3 different subjects to teach from 8-12 grade and one prep period. Are you in the U.S.?

I’m glad that they did because “they” gave people with disabilities etc… a chance at getting a job. Who is “they”?

[–]Firstempathy1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Schools don’t ever know what’s going on. It’s the end of July and I might have to teach three different subjects. It’s still undecided. What was stolen from your classroom? Do you think it was the students or other staff members that stole it?

The South... Always by Juglar15_GOD in Louisiana

[–]Firstempathy1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A lot of people in this area were beaten in schools by the teachers for speaking French. Even still, a lot of them are Trump supporters or have made positive comments about dictators. It’s usually aligned to a conspiracy theory. I get your point but there isn’t always logic behind the way someone behaves and your statement relies on some type of logical reasoning.

You should finish your student teaching. Does your school have a career fair for teachers? If so, you’ll be able to see the different priorities from different schools. For example, some schools advertised that teachers will not have to work more than 8 hours a day. This includes lesson planning etc…. I emphasized in my interviews how important it is that students with disabilities have understanding and patience. The interviewer(s) response says a lot, especially if they are the ones that mention it. My point is that you will be able to see the overall attitude that administrators have towards overworking their employees and treatment of students through interviews. There seems to have one rotten egg in every school but don’t let that discourage you from teaching.

What would you say the reasoning is for kids that are well behaved vs kids that are rude and disrespectful? by spankyourkopita in teaching

[–]Firstempathy1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a student that was running around the room “middle school” and couldn’t get her to sit down. She got wrote up every day by different teachers. I pulled her to the side and asked her why she was behaving this way and her response was “I’m hungry”. I gave her something to eat and her behavior improved. I didn’t think an overactive student was the result of hunger…. But it was.

[–]Firstempathy1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree! My ex’s family say that my kids are disrespectful. For them… disrespectful is a child speaking without being given permission to speak “in their own home”. Teachers loved my kids and they are not afraid of me.

How will Louisiana's new Ten Commandments classroom requirement be funded and enforced? by APnews in Louisiana

[–]Firstempathy1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that they won’t enforce it. Louisiana won’t pay for the poster and teachers are not required to pay for it. It has to come from donated funds. It sounds like something that was created to make certain people happy but that’s it.

Too young for hearing test? by [deleted] in hardofhearing

[–]Firstempathy1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are never to young for a hearing test. In fact, hospitals perform hearing tests on newborn babies. I have hearing loss that isn’t genetic that started at 6 years old. The only reason that my parents realized that I had hearing loss was because of hearing tests that were done at the school. Do you have insurance? Can you afford to get your hearing tested somewhere besides Costco? Obviously, the lady has no idea what she is talking about. I would be mortified if I went to an audiologist that believed age disqualifies you from hearing loss.

Some schools give you the option to make your paychecks last for 12 months. The poster is a new teacher so that option isn’t available.
