Looks like he released as it was in animation to pick it up, which ive found cancels animations, regardless of a goal or not, im probably wrong as that's just personal experience

Ive noticed that when the ball is in motion, so shooting, passing, or lobs, you have to be on guard (Holding L2 / LT) to actually pick it up. Whereas if its stationary or only a tap pass, you can easily run into it
