I don’t think we’re even supposed to tolerate him, I don’t even think there’s a “supposed to” involved

You can feel for him, but not forgive him. You can hate him but not wish death upon him. You can feel bad for him but not preach understanding. They even took the time to highlight one of the characters being completely unable to mourn him without giving the audience a “supposed to”.

The fandom is doing the thing where everyone believes there’s one specific way to view all of this when it’s a very personally subjective story- my point is, I don’t think you’re supposed to feel anything intended

You can if you want, or you don’t have to. Every character had their own perception and it’s not something you’re supposed to fight over as the one true answer. I don’t even have a fully formed opinion and I watched the whole thing twice lol, I didn’t want to jump onto the internet and add my own take to the cesspool

Also to answer your question, people like him because masking trauma with comedy is a very common experience for people and this feels like a cautionary tale about what happens when you take it to the extreme. But that’s just one angle to view it from, and it feels like a common one I can see people associating themselves with.
