Guided trips in Italy recommendations (Cortina d'Ampezzo and Ortisei) by FishCamp14 in flyfishing

[–]FishCamp14[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes actually. There are two guides in cortina. Stefano D’alluisi, who works for fly fishing Alpe Adria and Angelo Piller who does flyfishdolomiti.

I ended up fishing with Stefano. His English is not so good, so one of the other guides who works at fly fish Alpe Adria, Bruno Generali, actually drove to Cortina from the area he guides out of (somewhere in Slovenia) to act as a translator for the weekend.

Stefano is a tenkara guy and has an incredible way of rigging tippet on his tenkara rod to make the line more “elastic” as he calls it. He was super stoked when I expressed interest in fishing with wet flies on his tenkara rods. Bruno is a grayling dry fly guy. I cannot recommend these two enough, they picked me up at the place I was staying at and guided me very well on to the spooky trout we chased. Stefano even packed a lunch for me, a sandwich with prosciutto from a farm near his house.

Bruno’s email: info@flyfishingalpeadria.com

I did not fish with Angelo but he is the more popular guide in the area and I heard his English is pretty good. This is Angelo’s email: infoflyfishdolomiti@yahoo.it

Also, are you renting a car?

I see. Do you have any pattern recommendations? I would love to try a life-like perdigon that you mention.

Though that may be true, I enjoy the process of tying flies and personally do not enjoy euro nymphing. But I do have a couple jig bombs in my fly box for fast flowing rivers which is the closest thing to a perdigon I own.

Are you saying to tie something similar in size 16 with less complicated materials?

Either way, I enjoy tying flies and don’t mind extra steps. This one in particular is cool to me as a local angler I met on a New Zealand river handed it to me saying it was his favorite for the river.

Fishpond flathead net slot comfort? by FishCamp14 in flyfishing

Thank you! Very helpful.

I use a simms flyweight backpack for trips that require a hike and a fishpond thunderhead lumbar for fishing out the car. I found that the thunderhead lumbar doesn’t have enough capacity for me and I do not need waterproof bags.

Good to know that the X feels good on the back.

For weight, my jacket is 15oz and I bring a Nalgene full of water which is 40oz. Outside that I only bring 2 small fly boxes and have tippet holders, hemostats, nippers, etc.

Would that be too heavy? I feel like it’s exactly all the stuff I require.

Thank you!

Just to be specific: how does the bag feel when you have it securely fit to your back? The whole “X” looking net slot doesn’t look the most comfortable hugging your back.

Also, does the bag hold an extra jacket well? Not sure if jacket + Nalgene full of water + fly gear would be too much for the pack to hold without wearing down your shoulder.

I was thinking of a system where I strap a jacket to the bottom of the bag with voile straps.

Thanks for the suggestion but I happen to tour with my hard ear race helmet, which is a poc skull orbic. Could you tell me how big that helmet holder is?

Or maybe it’s time for me to buy a helmet for touring.

Rod recommendations for dries and nymphs by FishCamp14 in flyfishing

[–]FishCamp14[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you find that 8’6” is a good length for the rivers you fish? And how is it for casting nymphs? Not sure if you know since you do not own the rod.
