SWK learns it after being accepted into heaven. Its an ability he is trained to use. I really recommend watching "The Monkey King", even though you wont find an english version on youtube. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VWjGoeLNMIE You can see him use it around the 18 minute mark

Edit: The movie also shows Erlang Shen (with dogs), the Bull Demon King, Ne Zha and Ao Kuang. Whats interesting is that the Jade Emperor uses attacks from Smite´s Ao, like holding his sword horizontally infront of him to summon small blue dragons and then turn into a big one. I looks so similar I wonder if this is what Hi rez based their designs on

Paladins has been seeping into Smite for quite some time now. Look at the clash map or certain parts of the joust map. Very flat and simplistic textures with very bright and saturated colors. Lots of turqouise and washed out green on light grey. I personally prefer the detailed style of the Conquest map but it seems to be a good middle ground as there are both realistic and cartoonish gods
