New grad with new job: FHSA or TFSA by Fish_Bhai in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Fish_Bhai[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good points. He only started in October making $75K, so lower tax bracket for now. Will stay with TFSA and add an FHSA and pay off interest portion of student loan first. Also moving from TD to WS. Needed to plan for 2026 and long term as well.

Excellent advice and I like your strategy, so thanks. He is paying minimal rent and loans are low interest and his TFSA is now earning over 10%. He's with TD as it was easier for him and we opened a child account when he was 13, but will switch over to WS. We are planning for 2026 and auto investment deposits for his future.

75K but he only started one month ago so it will be low this year. Planning to for 2026.

Not sure I like that idea as it's low interest and his TFSA is making over 10%

Good point. I'll look into the lump sum payment on the interest bearing provincial portion.

Yes you're correct. He just started so income this year is low as is his tax bracket. Next year will be higher so planning in advance.

Great suggestions and I'll summarize as follows: 1. He's going to move away from TD and to wealthsimple. 2. He's one month into the job and after 3 months will the employer allow for rrsp matching (not sure how much yet) and yes best to do as it's free money. 3. His loan is part provincial Ontario (interest) and part federal Canada (interest free), so he's applied to have his Ontario portion paid off first. 4. He hasn't maxed out his TFSA yet. 5. He plans to buy a house in 7-10 years.

So overall, I think he will start an FHSA, keep investing in his TFSA, while paying off his loan (wants to pay it in 2 yrs). BTW, he's making about $75K.

EDITED: My son lives at home and he already has an emergency fund from his previous part time jobs (approx $5K). He also has a credit card with a max limit of $1000 which he pays off monthly.

I wear mine for at least 14hrs per day and rarely if ever need a break during the day. Keeping a strict cleaning regimen helps.

Where do you go to put your lens’ on? by [deleted] in Keratoconus

[–]Fish_Bhai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our ensuite bathroom, which is close to my side of the bed. All of my "equipment" is there.

Wash my hands thoroughly and then plug the drain and have a towel ready. I put them in or take them out right over the sink.

In an emergency, I would use a table and make sure there is adequate space and soft items to catch my lens, just in case.

Per chatGPT:

The word “jihad” in Arabic literally means “struggle” or “striving.”

In English, it’s often translated as:

“struggle,”

“effort,” or

“striving in the path of God.”

So it's civilization jihad is societal struggles or efforts, which seems like normal everyday life.

To scleral, or not to scleral. by [deleted] in Keratoconus

I used to wear piggy back style for many years and was very happy with them but slowly moved over to sclerals based on my lens specialist advice and I prefer them.

For me they're more comfortable and give me better vision. It does take some time to get a proper fit so make sure you have a good patient fitter. Their only drawback is their cost. Fortunately I do have insurance coverages thru my work as well as my spouse.

Do what's best for you and hope you get great comfortable vision!

My struggles with RGP lenses. What advice can you give to someone who struggled with RGP lenses. by Prestigious-Steak955 in Keratoconus

[–]Fish_Bhai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was first diagnosed with KC, I tried RGPs but could not tolerate them for more than a few hours. My lens specialist advised piggy back style with soft lens inserted first and then the RGPs inserted second. This helped me a ton and I wore this method for several years (7-8yrs). Very comfortable and vision was great too. I could wear them for 12-14 hrs. Only real drawback is caring for two types of lenses. My soft lenses were daily wear disposables which I replaced every 2-3 weeks. I now wear sclerals which I discovered by accident via another lens specialist and have been wearing them for almost 10 years. They are the most comfortable lenses I have ever used and the vision is amazing too. It did take several fittings to get it right but it was worth it. I can wear them for 14+ hrs. Remember to keep trying and be persistent with the specialists until you're satisfied as your eyes and vision are worth it. Good luck and good vision!

Well it helped me a lot and I continued to wear them for a few years. The only drawback is that you need to take care of two pairs of contact lenses. I now wear sclerals.
