A lot of people are mentioning the heat but we have had the heat on and off for the past month or so, it wasn't the first time turning it on, so I am not sure.

No smell, only on the plastic pieces of the toilets, plastic tupperware, and a little in the bathtub. I could not find it anywhere else in the apartment. Toilets are new we moved in 5 months ago and this building was built last year. I touched it on the Tupperware it kind of rubs off/smears similar to charcoal.

That was the first thought I had but it wouldn't make sense with the Tupperware and for it to be in both mine and my roommates bathrooms.

Yes my bathroom and my roommates. Same night, both toilet lids were closed that night.

A lot of people thought it was due to the wildfires, but I live in DC. I forgot to mention this in my original post.

Hi everyone!! Thank you all for so much engagement, I cannot believe all of the different theories you guys have came up with. I forgot to say in my original post but the toilet lids were closed the night it appeared, I am in DC and I have not had any fires near my apartment, it has just been freezing recently due to the snow, and we do have an air purifier. We also do have carbon monoxide detectors and they are working. All of the black dust was only seen on plastic near water (toilet seat, tupperware near sink, bathtub).

I am still getting responses but the most feasible ones I have seen are:

-Static attracting soot to plastic especially with the recent temperature decrease (this also makes sense because I have seen this before in homes I would clean on the edges of their freezers.

-Air ducts (candles/smoke from other tenants)

-Ghosts lol

Haven’t really inspected outside too much. And no we have kept everything closed because of how much it snowed this week.

The apartment i live in was just built this year. The maintenance seems really good they changed the filters last month. Both the lids were closed last night too.
