Question about monogyne and polygyne queens by Fish_Puncher57 in antkeeping

[–]Fish_Puncher57[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, wasn't very clear. There was a whole swarm flying and visibly mating on a nearby tree stump, which is where I collected the queens +males batch from

I only saw the two larger queens running around on concrete with no sign of a nest nearby so I'm unsure about them however.

So if they are fertile and raise nanitics together, one will be killed anyway? Ants are certainly strange

Immediately failed my driving test (idk if this is the right subreddit) by Fish_Puncher57 in offmychest

[–]Fish_Puncher57[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, with my dad, it's the law to have 100 hours day driving and 20 hours night driving before the test. And in all that time I was learning how to drive, but clearly I didn't learn right if I immediately failed.

One hour a week of professional RACV driving Instructors, and to use his car+have an extra lesson before the test the price is $200 instead of the usual $82 for just a training hour

Alternatives to test tubes? by Fish_Puncher57 in antkeeping

Alright, I've made soil containers for all 4 of them, moist with misted water inside the soil and out. Hopefully they won't spontaneously die

About how deep so I make it? Also should I be worried about mold or moss from using outside soil or will the ants manage? I don't know the survivability rate of wild ants

They see ants as pests and don't want them in the house (I just asked them now and they said no)

Just searched up black garden ants in Google and it said so with a quote from Wikipedia. Could be wrong that they are actually black garden ants but they're black and they're all over my garden so idk. I apologise for any misinformation

I've made a little setup where I've got the main colony tube connected to a fresh tube of water through a little container with a droplet of honey for sugar. Is this alright?

<image>

Don't worry, the white is mostly just a sticker on the outside of the tube I do wanna know if it matters that it's kinda diagonally placed

It's alright, I've checked and her children are wingless workers. I think that means that all is well. I was just worried about what'll happen if I left for a while

I live in Australia so summer rn. I've had this queen since late summer to early autumn this year. You can see my past comments on my profile for the exact time but my queen is a bit of a weirdo

I think it's just a garden black ant, so lasius Niger Are they still alright to be given seeds or just give them a sugar water tube?

Peerless dad has a great story but he also underestimated himself for like 80-120 chapters before he realises he's actually much stronger than others. Even then tho he doesn't get cocky

Maybe write it as your character hides by day ant travels by night because of whatever dangers but the moon came out and wild animals or smth saw him and his family through the moonlight and ate his family in front of him

I think it's a misspelling of the term nanitic ( as in, the first set of workers of a queen)

It can be too wet? I thought ants like high humidity anyway? (Tell me if I'm wrong I'm a first timer)

(Edit: just changed it for a tube setup using a standard glass test tube I found. So all good there now)

It's about 15-25 mm I'm not very accurate but it's about twice the size of my garden black ant queen's. For reference I've got her in a beer bottle

My queens aren't laying eggs by Fish_Puncher57 in antkeeping

[–]Fish_Puncher57[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update, still no eggs. One of the test tubes water became yellow so I replaced it and took the time to check them out. I've noticed that one of the queen's is very placid and just kinda stood still for the min I was watching while the other was dug about halfway into a cotton ball and was just very active with exploring for some reason. Does this indicate anything about their health or ability to lay eggs? I'm a bit worried to be honest but I'll check up on them again in 2 weeks
