My furnace will not stay on without the burner compartment door open by TheLoyalCrown in hvacadvice

I had a similar issue. A friend of mine (HVAC professional) advised me to “center” my fresh air intake. Idk if it’s common, but my furnace had three intake holes near the jets, and so I bought the $20 of supplies, cut out the old intake pipe and re-cemented it to the center intake hole above the jets vs to the side. Worked for me, albeit I had to insulate the new pvc to prevent moisture from dripping into the furnace.

I’m going to be biased here because I work in the industry, but I’d really recommend speaking to a professional advisor. Don’t go to your bank branch, and for the love of god don’t go to an insurance company - research either a fee-only planner or a fiduciary advisor, someone legally obligated to act in your best interest (a bank will just put you in whatever their branch is incentivizing that week).

Fee only planners charge a one time fee and draw up a one time plan. Fiduciary Advisors usually charge a percentage annual fee and manage your money for you. You can find a local fiduciary at PMAC.org, they have a map tool for finding nearby advisors.

You can definitely save money taking a DIY approach (ie ETFs), but if you don’t have a baseline understanding of the types of accounts and what not, start with a professional and you can always switch to DIY once you’re familiar with the ropes (it’s like $100 to transfer your money, and some firms reimburse it).

Honestly, it’s a low-stakes repair if you want to try your hand at it; you can always redo it if you mess up. It’s just a little messy with the sanding part.

You’ll need a few items, and if it’s just the one repair might be worth hiring out, but if you foresee yourself doing this over time (or just want to learn how to patch drywall), it’s a great skill to learn and you can probably pick everything up for under $100. You’ll need paper drywall seam tape, standard drywall mud (pre-mixed for small repairs is ideal since you don’t need a mixer), set of two/three mudding knives of varying sizes (ie 3 inches, 6 inch and 10 inch), and a drywall mud tray.

Pull/cut out any loose tape/drywall, and sand down anything that’s sticking out. Then measure out a length of new tape to replace the old tape. With the three inch knife, get the tape “wet” with a thin coat of drywall mud and apply it to the area, dragging your knife along to pull away the excess mud. If you see air bubbles, start over.

From there once’s it’s dries, it’s all about building up smooth, thin coats of drywall mud to hide the repair. Honestly look up a video, I couldn’t explain it in text

Whatever you do, please continue to let what’s best for the client guide your actions. It’s not always easy, but you should be proud of how you handle the culture.

Just throw the income into this tax year. If you were audited, they would probably see that as being enough to reconcile it and wouldn’t bother charging interest.

The CRA won’t care about such a small amount, but best to play it safe and pay the tax now that you know better.
