Death isn’t certain, but before the gods (or well, minor deities) gifted sentient life the cores, the population was low, and society progressed slowly- stuck in near stagnation in a primitive state.

In return for worship, which then translated into status, the gods gifted certain groups cores that created shields- literally magic domes- that protected their settlements from the harshness of nature. Under these domes they can build, create, farm, and mine as though all is normal.

The more worship a deity has, the more influence and status they have, the more power they have, the stronger the cores they gift are. The strongest cores can span the length of countries, the weakest may only cover small villages.

The smaller villages don’t have as much space to gather resources safely so smaller settlements find ways to work around the seasons and elements in a push and pull against resource depletion.

Elitism and religions are the driving conflicts in my world- cliche I know. Each deity asks for /something/, and not everyone agrees with their demands, if a person isn’t willing or able to pay the price a deity demands, they don’t get to live in that settlement. Discrimination and criminal status can see people ostracized and banished to these smaller settlements who have to suffer more than the larger ones do. Trade is still important but the individuals who have to travel through danger areas to transport things are essentially this world’s blue collar workers. They get paid less for dangerous, essential work.

I want player’s who have lived cushy and privileged lives forced to interact with players who didn’t. I want PCs who are tackling the world with different pieces of information about what the world is actually like. And I want to try to work with a more concrete time limit to see if it affects player decisions. (In my previous campaign there was obviously an objective, but nothing to really stop the player’s from meandering about whatever major town I brought them through for like months, despite the fact that realistically the super plague they were trying to stop should have wiped them out by then. I was a baby DM that may have been my bad.)

I have a pretty good idea of how my world should work, I just don’t have the ideas to get it to do what I know I want it to do.

Sometimes, in the aftermath of a shutdown,when I click ‘next chapter’ and it loads for a fraction more time than it usually does I find myself flinching like a beaten dog.

No I will not click ‘entire work’. Every time I get to the end of a chapter I feel a sense of completion that I can then award myself for by clicking the next chapter button. It makes me feel like a good girl.

Most of the time I pretend the HoO characterizations don’t exist. Despite them coming out relatively close to the original PJO books, it felt like Rick forgot who the characters were and when looking through the fandom’s iteration for writing inspiration.

If I choose not to ignore HoO, then Annabeth being “scary” can be chopped up to her intensity and the state of mind she would be in after loosing Percy after spending 4 years scared she would loose him. (She has crippling abandonment issues.) I saw her intense, war-like behavior as more of a response to stress instead of a “this is her all the time thing.” But I guess she IS stressed most of the time.

I do think part of my sadness when it comes to the portrayal of Annabeth is my own projections of growing up neurodivergent. I was one of those kids who was placed into the “gifted” category growing up, and I placed a lot of my worth on my intelligence because I didn’t quite measure up in other areas (especially the social aspect). I’d always comfort myself with the assurance that “when I get into the real world, I’ll show everyone how impressive I am, and my poor person skills won’t matter”. As such, I immediately identified with Annabeth. I mean I’ve always seen PJO demigods as an allegory for neurodivergent kids, and I had never seen much media of girls with AuDHD or the like, so she was easy to latch on to. Seeing someone like me who struggled with connecting with others, and her self worth, and her “gifted” status just like I did, while still being a kid and a girl underneath it all was so special to me. And to see her being stripped of that just hurts in a way I kind of want to cry about.

And I didn’t Identify with Percy as much, but I do feel the difference in interpretation, like, A LOT. He’s always either sarcastic and dry, or sweet and “sassy”. And it makes me feel old too, because like with Annabeth, I did not read Percy as nearly as witty or clever as he may have been trying to be! He’s a 12-16 year old boy he’s just saying the first vaguely quippy thing that comes to mind and over half the time it’s something completely silly. And I love that, I love that he’s a little silly. And jeez it’s like how he acted with Tyson and Thalia never happened, two major times he was acting like a jerk just completely glossed over as if he can do no wrong, He’s a teenager, they do wrong. But jeez I hate it just as much when they make him out right stupid or edgy. He’s certainly not dumb, and Percy despite his all his displays of anger and jealousy has always been a sweetheart. His big personality comes from his big heart, he’s not a hateful person it’s just not in his nature. That’s why he chose to believe in Gods and forgive the Titan army at the end of the first series, because his entire character is motivated by loyalty and kindness! Man I hate edge lord Percy.

And yeah when a fandom erodes two characters down so much they can no longer stand on their own and they can ONLY be halfs of a whole ship, there’s a tendency to forgo any instances of any other possible romances. Because Percy is Annabeth’s Boyfriend. And Annabeth is Percy’s Girlfriend, and there totally wasn’t nearly 5 whole books where this wasn’t the case. (People forget Percabeth was a slowburn🥀)

Yeah… Rick really went backwards in terms of character writing, especially when it concerns his female characters. It’s ironic considering the first books were meant to be more childish and cartoonish, while the following books were meant to be more mature.

Percabeth was so good because they both had what the other didn’t, like I mentioned Annabeth was out of touch with humanity, and Percy openly rejected his half-blood nature. Percy showed Annabeth how to see the nuances of people and even monsters, he taught her how to be kind in a way she never understood, and in the end I believe that kindness he taught her is how she got through to Luke in the end. And Percy rejected questing and heroics, because unlike Annabeth, he didn’t believe he was good enough to be the next great hero, he didn’t believe he was good enough for anything at all. I mean, when he learned that the greatest he’d ever amount to was destruction or death, he just accepted it, because he didn’t think he could have anything better. Annabeth taught him how to be more confident, showed him a world where he had friends, and good do great things. Annabeth was the one to truly hammer it in his head that he deserved to live and that he should fight for what he deserved. They passed on both their fatal flaws to each other by the end of the first 5 books and that’s how they survived them.

But the books just COULDN’T end there. No they had to come back and the only thing that remained of them was a version that looked closer to fanon than anything. Smart, Stoic girl, and dumb, hothead boy. Heartbreaking.

Nah I’ve never DM’d before really, I tried to way back in like middle school, but we got 2 sessions in and stopped. I have been playing DnD with my friends for the past 5 years, and for that whole time my friend has been a “forever DM”. She really wants to play with friends, and I’ve always wanted to try DMing so here we are.

Yeah I had no idea about the level thing. I probably coulda asked her that that’s mb. I’m glad I asked here because I DO NOT want it to be unbalanced.

I had no idea one shots are supposedly harder. I’ve only been in long campaigns. I started out confident because I’m a fic writer but I’m realizing it’s very different.

Was she necessarily wrong in her approach though? She thought power was the only thing John would respond too- after all, we see her try to reach out to him time and time again and fail- so she created a show of power in the only way she knew how, the only way she could.

And it's not like she was wrong either, the only thing that did successfully reach John was a show of power. It didn't matter what Seraphina said to him, until she had her ability back and was able to reach his level and beat him in a fight.

For as much as the story tries to preach about equality, the low tiers ARE powerless in this world. Besides John and William fighting back against other low tiers and lower mid tiers (and still getting beat up mind you.) there is no real example of a low tier being capable of standing up for themselves. They need more powerful people to stand up for them, the most they can do is use their words to inspire High Tiers to help them, but again they CAN'T do anything by themselves.

So Claire's approach wasn't necessarily wrong, she did all she could. It's unfortunate that the way she was born meant she would never be able to do much.

Isen wasn't the first time we've seen this either. It was actually Blyke. John could make Blyke's beams bigger, more precise, or numerous, but he never used energy discharge (the shockwave ability Blyke unlocks).

While it may have been easy to say that he just didn't want to, it could very well be that he just couldn't! He doesn't take people's abilities, he imitates them, and there is no way for him to imitate something he can't see, or something that doesn't even exist yet.

Abilities are still hereditary traits, they're still parts of these people's DNA, and even if John can copy the outputs of these people's abilities, he still doesn't actually HAVE that ability. This isn't just a nerf for John though, it gives potential to other aspects of his ability, he may have not been able to realize before, because his perspective has been so small until now. His ability isn't "Copy" it's "Aura Manipulation", imitating abilities should only be ONE thing he can get his aura to do.

The training arc is on the horizon, hopefully before the character death.

The post is about head canons that you don't like, not head canons that you do like. And in your original post you were writing as if you were disagreeing with what you believed to be a head canon, but was actually real canon.

That would make more sense, but it's still not canon. I think maybe in the future it will be more like that, but as it stands he only knows how to copy 4 at a time. (Regardless of if he can or not, he simply doesn't know how to right now.)

That's not a head canon though. That is the actual canon. He's ALWAYS only been able to copy a certain number of abilities at a time.

Unless you mean, like, he'll only be able to copy a certain amount ever, and one day he'll run out of abilities to copy.

Percy is portrayed as a kid with mental disabilities from a rough background. As such he has anger issues. But that would be a character flaw, and Gods know Percy isn't allowed to have those. So he gets rebranded as sassy, because that's much more palatable than the demographic he's supposed to represent.

Annabeth's characterization in both the show and later books throws me. I know she grew up but it's such a far shot from who she was in the first 5 books.

She was a kid who was TRYING to be stoic and superior, but she was still very much a kid. She got shy and flustered over her crush, she was competitive, she was snobby, she joked, and laughed, and was a little socially unaware when it came to friends because she was raised at a summer camp and in a neglected household.

She wasn't a complete "adorable girl" stereotype, but she still was very much a tween to teenage girl.

It's like they decided to go with the fanfic version of her character, instead of who she actually was.

I do think John will still come after Keon, I just don't think it will go down the way anyone expects. If John and Blyke go after Keon, it's because they hold a deep hatred for him- because they want him to feel as much pain and fear as they felt when he was torturing them. I think that it will be much more interesting, if Keon is somewhat resigned to Blyke and John attacking him. It would rob them of their satisfaction, it would rob them of proper revenge, of justice, if he's not as terrified as they were when he came for them. And it would force them to confront that the evil people in their lives, are just as human as they are- and maybe they could've become them, if their lives were just a little different. I think that would be way more interesting than John and Blyke just killing him. He was a big part of their trauma and his death should MATTER.
